Hi

I know this is the wrong place to post this but people generally seem to answer threads on AIBU!

DH is 30 in December and wants a party - because it is so close to Christmas I really need to invite people now so they keep the date free.

He has now decided he wants a theme (arse) but I have no imagination. A friend is having Gansters and Molls for her 30th early next year so that is out.

Any ideas? It is close to christmas so I don't really want people to have to spend loads on costume hire. Would you come if you were invited or make an excuse so you didn't have to dress up?

I love fancy dress parties!

Rock'n'Roll heroes?

Historical heroes and heroines?

notnowbernard · 06/08/2010 11:22

Mods n Rockers?

SweetnessAndShite · 06/08/2010 11:23

Vicars and Tarts - you never see that one anymore!

SweetnessAndShite · 06/08/2010 11:25

Seriously. Cowboys/wild west is a good one coz it doesn't cost a lot for people to dress up and you can make as much or little effort as you want/can afford. (plus you could hire a bucking brocho and have a hog roast if you're flush)

ButterpieBride · 06/08/2010 11:25

What are his hobbies? Was there anything unusual about his birth/childhood? What is his birthdate?

(I love themed parties)

30andMerkin · 06/08/2010 11:27

What's his first initial?

Say his name is Peter, you could have a 'P' party, so everyone can pick their own costume...

Pirates, Peter Pan, Prostitutes, Princes/esses, Posh, Politicians, the two blokes from Porridge, etc etc

Or 'come as your favourite drink' and get everyone to bring the ingredients.

Wrestlers and Ice Dancers.

YellowDaffodil · 06/08/2010 11:28

Where do you hire a bucking broncho - that sounds fab!

Butterpie - Its the 13th and he's a joiner. His family are a bit unusual but I don't think that counts!

Hat party?

A letter party - so if DH's name begins with C you could have a "C" party.

Both of these provide plenty of scope for dressing up without being too confined - so guests can make what they want of it, spend £ or make something out of what they have at home. And even those that hate dressing up (some do) will wear a hat or make an effort to find some connection with a letter.

I love the idea of a cowboy party/barn dance complete with hog roast!

Lavitabellissima · 06/08/2010 11:30

Hollywood - then you can go as anything from films/cartoons/tv or just get red carplet glam if you are scared of dressing up1

KathyImLost · 06/08/2010 11:30

I think a stripey party would be cool. You could have stripey drinks (you know, those layered ones) and stripey snacks. And most people have something with stripes on in their wardrobe so it's not a big ask.

I really hope that's how you spell stripey. Hmm. Stripy?hmm. Stripey, yeh.

SweetnessAndShite · 06/08/2010 11:37

yellowdaf Lots of bouncy castle hire places do them. try googling "bucking bronch hire" plus the area you live. Not sure of the cost.

montmartre · 06/08/2010 11:39

Best oarties we have been to:
James Bond
Abba

Meow75 · 06/08/2010 11:43

Super heroes is always good too - I reckon a kid born in 1980 was probably a big fan of Marvel/DC or the other TV cartoons, and many friends too!!!

maktaitai · 06/08/2010 11:46

I like the idea of the letter parties, that sounds really flexible. I love dressing up so would go all out - dh would probably wear a shirt in a colour starting with the letter Wink

Black and White is quite classy though you will always get some 'free spirit' who decides to wear red or whatever.

Mowgli1970 · 06/08/2010 11:50

I'd go for Hollywood glamour - black tie for men, evening dress for ladies.

YellowDaffodil · 06/08/2010 11:51

Thanks for all your help. Love all these ideas.

Will see what DH likes, there will always be those who won't dress up but maybe the letter theme will solve that.

As its close to Christmas how about a Pantomime theme??

treas · 06/08/2010 12:07

Wild West - easy, checked shirts and jeans / denim skirts
Chilli and Rice / baked Potatoes, Line dancing around hay bales.

You could hire a Saloon Girl outfit I'm sure you dh would think all his birthdays had come at once!

YellowDaffodil · 06/08/2010 12:39

Thanks all - just waiting to see what DH fancies.

I may need to start an AIBU to not cater my DH party so I can hire a bucking broncho? thread.
