to make her knock for her Avon catalogue?

I have a polite sign on my front door that says "No commercial leaflets please". Its clear and obvious. It means that in the past year since putting it there, I could count on one hand the pieces of "junk" mail I've had through my door.

Yesterday when I got home there was an Avon catalogue on my mat. It had a post it note stuck to it that bossily stated that I should leave the catalogue on my porch for collection on Monday, no please or thank you or anything like that.

I have put the catalogue on my windowsil for safe keeping. AIBU to make her knock for it?

"Avon catalogue? Are you sure? That sounds very much like a commercial leaflet to me. I very much doubt anyone would have put a commercial leaflet through my door with such a clear sign on my letterbox...would they?"

Haha - I remember that.

Bettaware is also worth a laugh, agree with the previous poster who said it was stuff that was too crap to be sold in Lakeland, how apt!

My dd who has just started doing avon, got a very long very polite hand written note tonight explaining why the woman didn't want an avon book! A simple no thanks would of been fine, but was very kind of her!

NestaFiesta · 03/08/2010 08:38

Avon online isn't cheaper as the same discounts are in the catalogue and you have to pay postage unless you spend at least £20. Anyway I have a soft spot for Avon as my Mum and Nanna used to have it when I was growing up and I used to get Pretty Peach soaps etc when I was little. Its a real tradition and I would be sad to see it go if it ever dried up.

Anyway Sloany, you did the right thing.

curryfreak · 03/08/2010 11:02

Yanbu. Do it!

SeaTrek · 03/08/2010 11:56

I would just put it out when she asked and add a polite note in it asking for no more to be delivered, as requested on your door.

SloanyPony · 03/08/2010 15:57

Its flipping well still there

Sloany, in answer to your question on Monday morning, yes if you order something from Avon and don't like it for whatever reason, you are entitled to a refund. You can use as much or as little of it as you like and still get the refund, provided it's within 3 months of you ordering it. Bloody annoying that she hasn't collected it, but I have to say as an Avon rep, I leave notes asking them to be put out on a certain day and sometimes don't get a chance to collect it. I'm sure she'll be round to pick it up soon, and if it rains in the meantime and the brochure gets wet, well then it's her own fault!

SloanyPony · 03/08/2010 16:49

Oh that's good - I like companies that offer refunds for their products even if used, and are confident enough in their products to do so.

Boden. QVC. AVON!!!

bin it and don't answer door

zazen · 03/08/2010 17:43

I love Avon catalogues, and any catalogue really - something to read on the loo and if you're short loo roll, well they can be very useful!!

LucyLouLou · 03/08/2010 18:49

SloanyPony - is there any chance you are willing to leave it there so we can all see how long it takes to go? For some reason, I have taken an irrational interest in what happens! Pregnancy hormones going mad lol.

MassiveBumperlicious · 03/08/2010 20:17

Just read the whole thread and in the beginning I was in the 'bin it, you didn't ask for it camp' but have been converted by the 'she's just trying to make a living' brigade . This is all about supporting local businesses isn't it, mostly woman too I imagine.

Anyway I have just moved and got one last week and couldn't resist ordering something, like another poster said, I have a soft spot for Avon, reminds me of being a child. And like you sloany I value a company who refund their products if you don't like them. I can add Estee Lauder to your list, I returned some stupidly expensive face serum that just made my skin dry, and have returned shampoo to Aveda too. But Benefit don't, and I have really gone off it.

bubble551 · 01/12/2010 10:19

just wanted to say that i'm an avon rep myself and whenever i see the note on doors saying that they don't buy or sell at the dorr or anything like that - i don't put the brochure through. I also put a note on all my first books asking if the resident wanted to keep receiving the brochure and if not to write their address on that slip. I got a few back and have stuck to it! No point in annoying people with things they don't need or want!

Mum2HarryandBen · 01/12/2010 10:21

yanbu, as bubble says, they know they are annoying people.

SeaTrek · 01/12/2010 11:30

YANBU to get annoyed at all the tat that gets pushed through the door when you clearly say you don't want it. It really annoys me that people think it is ok to push rubbish into our homes!

Not sure I would bother being so confrontation over it though. When I get these kind of things through I just put them straight outside the door. Don't care if they get wet. They do make the place look messy though.

SeaTrek · 01/12/2010 12:24

LOL! Just realised that this is an old thread. Glad to see I am vaguely consistent with my answers.

ShirleyAvon · 29/03/2011 13:27

I have 7 Avon customers who have these signs on their doors. For some reason, people seem to know and recognise what Avon represents and don't find it intimidating as you would with maybe a double-glazing salesperson, or these people who want to know who supplies your gas etc.
I also think though that the Avon lady needs to revise her customer approach. Maybe a please and a thankyou may have made you see the situation differently and not left you wanting to be unreasonable.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 13:30

I find Avon catalpgues just as annoying as bumping four month old threads, frankly...

If it comes through my door it's my property, and as such will get binned immediately.

ShirleyAvon · 29/03/2011 14:09

Maybe you need a job that gets you out in the fresh air! I love walking, running and just being alive!! If you look you'd notice that I only joined Mumsnet today, so what a lovely welcome you gave to a newbie! Thanx love.

DontGoCurly · 29/03/2011 14:12

I threw out an Avon catalogue once. To me it was just junk mail.

The lady who called back for it was about 9 months pregnant, looked really wrecked tired and it was pissing rain. Just a poor tired human being. I felt sooooo guilty! Blush

Now I just leave it on the doorstep.

Quenelle · 29/03/2011 14:15

Avon and Betterware get one chance. We write 'Please don't deliver this again, or we will put it in the recycling.' Then when they do it again and knock for it we point them in the direction of the green bin.

hollyoaks · 29/03/2011 14:19

Why do people find leaflets, catalogues so irritating? It's somebody's effort to find more work which may or may not be of use to you. If not it's only a short trip to the recycle bin or back on the front door step.

MrsH75 · 29/03/2011 14:20

Leave it on the doorstep with a polite note to say you are not interested. Or tell her in person. Then if you get another one, bin it.

I was an Avon rep as my first job, only bothered with people who wanted to be customers, certainly wouldn't have pushed a catalogue through if someone had said 'no thanks'.

What is irritating is when you leave an order for Betterware/Avon or a charity bag or whatever and they don't collect it when they say or for ages afterwards.

Icelollycraving · 29/03/2011 14:21

Yabvu. Why pick it up? You seem to be relishing her collecting it. She is just trying to earn some money.
