to make her knock for her Avon catalogue?

I have a polite sign on my front door that says "No commercial leaflets please". Its clear and obvious. It means that in the past year since putting it there, I could count on one hand the pieces of "junk" mail I've had through my door.

Yesterday when I got home there was an Avon catalogue on my mat. It had a post it note stuck to it that bossily stated that I should leave the catalogue on my porch for collection on Monday, no please or thank you or anything like that.

I have put the catalogue on my windowsil for safe keeping. AIBU to make her knock for it?

"Avon catalogue? Are you sure? That sounds very much like a commercial leaflet to me. I very much doubt anyone would have put a commercial leaflet through my door with such a clear sign on my letterbox...would they?"

MuddlingThru - it's what I used to do as well (well I put a note in to 'tick the box' for always/christmas/sales/never). I used to really enjoy my Avon round (when it was persisting down anyway!!). You never know, I might take it up again one day. Lots of my clients had 'no junk mail' type stickers up, it seems that most people don't see the Avon catalogue as junk/commercial/unsolicited....

Damned if you do and damned if you don't I think !!

SloanyPony · 02/08/2010 09:34

I think anyone with a "no unsolicited" etc type sign on their door has no right to complain if they dont get Avon.

Do Avon offer a money back guarantee if you try a product, hate it for whatever reason (and have actually used it) and want a refund?

YANBU

Once , just out the door on my way to pick the DCs from school, this lady asks me if I had got the latest Avon catalogue and asks if she can drop me one. I say yes and rush off to school.
Next day this man knocks at my door asking to discuss my interest in becoming an Avon representative How on earth did this woman understand "yes drop a catalogue" as " Yes I would love to sell Avon products!" ?!?!! And how did she dare giving my adress to a total stranf=ger from that????

NestaFiesta · 02/08/2010 12:13

YABU. Its not a commercial leaflet. Avon reps get about £1 in every £4 of business they drum up. Its not much and it involves lots of traipsing in all weathers. What's wrong with a bit of good will for someone trying to make some money off their own back?

gorionine · 02/08/2010 12:22

How can it be not commercial when it is clearly trying to sell you something?

Why give a catalogue to someone who clearly state on the door they do not want it?

KnitterInTheNW · 02/08/2010 12:28

Avon lady here too...

When I first pushed catalogues through doors I also put a polite note in with 'please tick if you'd rather not recieve an Avon catalogue again'. Lots of people did.

A lot of my regular customers actually have 'no commercial leaflet' stickers on their front doors. They don't seem to see Avon as a leaflet.

Really, just put a polite note out with the catalogue. No need to be rude/petty.

AuntieMaggie · 02/08/2010 12:41

Yes the skin so soft has been reputed to act as an insect repellent - it's got a herbally smell to it and my mum swears its the only thing thats worked for her!

There is a lot of work involved in Avon for the money involved - you only get paid £1 in every £4 if you reach your target.

As someone said perhaps a child or something was helping deliver the brochure and missed the sign.

The stuff in the brochure may look 'cheap and nasty' but my nailvarnish has lasted a lot longer than most others I've tried, am currently loving the pineapple smelling shower gel and other stuff I'm using.

And yes they have a money back guarantee.

sapphireblue · 02/08/2010 14:33

what I don't understand is that you can buy from Avon on-line.........so why does anyone need a representative to come to their door??

LolaKnickers · 02/08/2010 14:47

I never put catalogues back out for people to collect - I don't want rubbish littering my doorstep.

How about changing the sign to say "no commercial leaflets or catalogues please".

Incidentally, I agree with sapphire about ordering avon on line - it's cheaper as there are discount codes etc.

dixiechick1975 · 02/08/2010 14:53

Most leave the cataloque in a plastic bag so I just pop them straight back outside the front door to save being bothered.

It is undercover and I have enough to do without remembering to put a catalogue out on a set day.

I used to put the charity bags out empty on the correct day (to be reused) but they were never collected and we get so many I just bin them now.

On mother's day a couple of years ago the doorbell rang whilst I was serving lunch(had everyone around for a roast dinner) SIL answered and it was the bettaware/kleeneze man complaing that the catalogue was wet! I

haoshiji · 02/08/2010 14:57

I get tons of pizza / chicken / stair lift/ window washing / insurance leaflets (a lot of it comes from the post man/woman). Also charity bags; at least one a week asking for unwanted stuff. It gets on my nerves. I don't have a sign up but I don't think it would make much difference as next door does and she was complaining over the fence the other weekend about how much crap they get through the letter box.

I would be tempted to say ?you can shove it right up your arse and fuck off whilst you are doing it.? But in reality would probably just put a post it note on asking not to drop any more off.

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/08/2010 15:03

I put Avon/Betterware catalogues outside on top of the recycling box. If it hasn't been collected by the time it is bin day it goes in the recylcling bin.

I wouldn't go out of my way to make a point, but then again I would not be happy with someone ringing the doorbell. I too find it intrusive. I don't know why we have to be considerate to people doing door to door sales. So they are trying to make ends meet? Aren't we all.

OrmRenewed · 02/08/2010 15:07

Just leave it outside

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/08/2010 15:12

I would love the Innovations catalogue to come back, though.

It sold a load of wonderful rubbish. Never bought anything, just read it and chortled.

I am amazed that anyone buys anthing from Kleenze tbh. Really expensive and rubbish.

wornoutbutstillwonderful · 02/08/2010 15:21

YABU I can't believe your making such a fuss just put a note on it and put it outside after this go back inside and think of something a little more interesting to be bothered about!

lucky1979 · 02/08/2010 17:44

I lke things like Avon catalogues and never get them! I'm terrible at remembering to put the bins out though so would struggle with catalogues. Maybe that's why I don't get any.

activate · 02/08/2010 17:48

put it in the bin

SloanyPony · 02/08/2010 20:36

Right I've come over all reasonable and wrote a polite note and popped it on the porch last night.

There were too many people who made that suggestion to ignore it as the most reasonable course of action.

onadietcokebreak · 02/08/2010 20:43

Just make sure you put your address on it cos she wont see it til she gets home!

LucyLouLou · 02/08/2010 20:44

Avon catalogues don't really fall into the catagory of leaflets IMO. I do sort of understand why you're annoyed, but your local rep might not have realised you counted the catalogue as one of your deliberately excluded items. Don't be petty about it (making her knock on the door IS being petty), just leave the catalogue outside as requested, but put a post-it on it saying you don't want anything more from Avon left at your house.

Please don't approach this by thinking the lady did it on purpose, chances are she didn't and this can be sorted with no ill feeling.

LucyLouLou · 02/08/2010 20:49

Oops, only just seen your last post! I think you did the right thing .

TLC123 · 02/08/2010 20:50

You don't live in herts do you, if so it was a very polite note

SloanyPony · 02/08/2010 20:53

Haha, no TLC, I dont babe.

Damn catalogue is still there by the way!!!

SloanyPony · 02/08/2010 20:54

Was it Innovations that used to sell the "cordless neck massager"?
