to make her knock for her Avon catalogue?

I have a polite sign on my front door that says "No commercial leaflets please". Its clear and obvious. It means that in the past year since putting it there, I could count on one hand the pieces of "junk" mail I've had through my door.

Yesterday when I got home there was an Avon catalogue on my mat. It had a post it note stuck to it that bossily stated that I should leave the catalogue on my porch for collection on Monday, no please or thank you or anything like that.

I have put the catalogue on my windowsil for safe keeping. AIBU to make her knock for it?

"Avon catalogue? Are you sure? That sounds very much like a commercial leaflet to me. I very much doubt anyone would have put a commercial leaflet through my door with such a clear sign on my letterbox...would they?"

When I used to get Avon there were houses with notices similar to yours, mainly the retirement bungalows...

So I respected the notices.

Only to get moaned at cos "ooh we want Avon, don't we Mavis?"

You honestly can't win.

I'd agree with the write a note on the order form.

I never know what to do with this type of thing, we live in an old fashioned Victorian terrace with no porch or whathaveyou...we're straight onto the pavement. Where do they expect us to leave these precious leaflets that otherwise blow away down the street causing litter?

tutu100 · 01/08/2010 19:09

Some people don't class Avon books in the same catorgory as fast food leaflets.

When I was an Avon Rep I did expect to loose a certain amount of books. I also never put a book through a door if I hadn't got it back the first time. However I did always collect them when I said I would and put a very polite note in saying if you people didn't want to be bothered by me knocking to get the book back could they leave it out please.

SloanyPony · 01/08/2010 19:15

I've always found this type of marketing a nuicance, to be honest. I accept that people are trying to make a few extra £££ and I accept that some people do like this style of marketing so its nothing personal against people who do it.

There is a great deal of it in this area - seriously, before I got the polite sign, I was getting 4 or 5 a week, most weeks - bettaware, kleeneze, avon, some kind of crafty kids thing...etc and not many collect when they say they will. They are all on the porch looking messy and gathering dirt.

So in order to politely opt out I bought the sign and the problem went away. Everyone else seems to know what a commercial leaflet is, and how to respect that.

FWIW, I think YABU! An Avon brochure isn't a leaflet, which is probably why she put it through your door! Perhaps you should change your sign to include "catalogues" as well? Then you won't be bothered by Bettaware and the like too! (Although surely, as others have pointed out, it would be less time consuming to just open the door and put it straight back on the doorstep as soon as you find it there?)

kando · 01/08/2010 19:19

sorry, cross posts with a few others there!

whomovedmychocolate · 01/08/2010 19:19

Slarty - tis not a book

It is a catalogue or a brochure.

A book is a bound narrative of information whether fact or fiction. Similarly the Next Directory is not a book. It is in fact shit a catalogue. And the Boden catalogue is just Littlewoods for the middle classes.

So there! I've said it. Be off with your calling things books which are not!

SlartyBartFast · 01/08/2010 19:21

ah but it is not a leaflet, wouldnt you concur ?

SlartyBartFast · 01/08/2010 19:23

actually op yabu... when she comes tomorrow, you must order somethign expensive, jsut to make up for your nastiness

whomovedmychocolate · 01/08/2010 19:25

I would concur - though it may come with a leaflet type order form - ha gotcha!

SlartyBartFast · 01/08/2010 19:28

hmm

onadietcokebreak · 01/08/2010 19:37

A couple of points.

Firstly I would not call an avon book a commercial leaflet. I have a no doorstop traders sign and think that would encompass these kind of trade. Commercial leaflets to me are Window cleaners/ Pizza/ Chinese etc

Secondly YABU- Often reps children help deliver these books especially when a new rep starts a round. A polite note with your address clearly displayed should suffice. If it doesnt then next time make her knock- politely explain again and then bin any future ones.

These reps are often people just looking for a bit of extra incomel. Books are expensive!

SlartyBartFast · 01/08/2010 19:48

OY OP

you need a new sign.... obviously which says no commercial leaflets or books or booklets or catalogues

onadietcokebreak · 01/08/2010 19:48

not a frickin leaflet either!

How about a brochure

SlartyBartFast · 01/08/2010 19:49

OR brochures

onadietcokebreak · 01/08/2010 19:53

Just did a google search.

Local councils and trading standards seem to have loads of stickers etc.

I got a scam wise sticker ages ago...the electric men still call though!

SloanyPony · 01/08/2010 19:55

I'm sure the wording of the sign is not the issue here. Anyone with half an ounce of common sense would realise that a person with a sign like this on their door does not want unsolicited marketing material.

If she put it through with the genuine opinion that it was somehow above or superior to this category, she is seriously deluded!

OP posts:
mangoandlime · 01/08/2010 19:59

You're not being nasty, no...but nobody is perfect. Just tell her and move on. I think you're over-thinking this!

Megatron · 01/08/2010 20:04

Incidentally, I also have a polite notice on my door. I still get crap posted through the door from time to time. I pick it up, put it in the recycling and forget about it. Can't say this kind of thing would annoy me so much that I would post on an internet forum about what form of action I should take about it but hey ho.

Lilymaid · 01/08/2010 20:08

I've got a sticker on my door - picked it up in the local library. It doesn't stop NPower "no we aren't selling, we are just doing a survey" or Betterware or Avon. Their catalogues get slung out by the front door immediately I come home. It also doesn't stop those wretched imitation charity clothes collectors who leave at least two bags a week at my house - all of which are binned unless they are directly from a charity or fast food retailers or any other of the trashy leaflets that are put through my door.
So YANBU, OP.

Morloth · 01/08/2010 20:11

Straight into the recycling bin here, we keep a bag in the communal hallway just for this stuff.

There is a sign saying no junk/catalogues. Not my problem if they want to ignore it.

SloanyPony · 01/08/2010 20:17

"Just tell her and move on"

Mango - that is exactly what I plan to do.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 01/08/2010 20:35

Lilymaid - those pretend charity bags really piss me off. We live in an affluent area and we get two a week. I reuse the bags to collect up my clothes and take them to a genuine charity shop.

That's three of us who think the OP is NBU hurrah!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 01/08/2010 20:53

i'm an avon Lady so i say don't be so petty - if you don't want a book in future write her a note and stick it on the book - she has to pay for them so i'm sure she would rather know than lose her hard earned commission!
