to think that there is an extraordinarily high instance of people whinging about nothing at the moment?

Every thread I open seems to be whinging about something so totally insignficant that it boggles the mind. I can't give examples as I don't want to quote individuals. I'm not one of the 'be grateful that's all you've got to worry about, brigade' but really, I don't know how some people go about their everyday lives when inconsequential things piss them off so much. I understand people coming on here for a whinge but I've seen threads from people who are really angry about things, really having a go at family members etc when the 'crime' is so tiny as to be non existent.

AIBU to think that people really need to get a grip and stop whining? Or have I just got too old and grumpy for MN? (could well be the case)

(Am prepared for a flaming, would be a darn sight more interesting!)

oh I reckon YABU. I like to think that everyone moans their tits off on here and then makes like Julie Andrews in RL

Mumsnet- Keeping Whinging About Nowt Off The Streets Of Britain

[skips off to tousle delightful semi-feral children over the roads' hair]

cupofcoffee · 27/07/2010 18:13

YANBU, I have noticed it too. Although I wonder what has triggered this moaning about nothing trend? Could it be a sign of the times in that things are generally difficult at the moment and when people are finding life hard in general they are less able to deal with the small things that previously they might have shrugged off?

Vallhala · 27/07/2010 18:23

Oh my word, no, you are damn well not being unreasonable!

UnquietDad · 27/07/2010 20:48

Inteesting theory, cupofcoffee, but I'd have expected the opposite - in affluent times people have too much time on their hands and can give head-space to their evil, manipulative and obviously abusive DH forgetting to put the bin out, the social niceties of "babycinos" or the vagaries of their wayward SIL, or whatever.

In straitened times, you'd think everyone would be more worried about paying their mortgage and their heating bill. It seems not...

bran · 27/07/2010 20:54

It's the humidity. I can't handled it at all and want to whinge the way my DC are whinging. Even my DH, who is Malaysian and therefore ought to be able to handle humidity with aplomb, has whinged endlessly about total trivia. Apparently he is always putting the phone back on the base because I leave it lying around, and other grave annoyances.

MathsMadMummy · 27/07/2010 20:59

yabu, just ignore nobody's forcing you to read them!

it just seems more like whinging (sp?) because it's so black and white on here - literally. these are the things that if you brought them up with your mates in RL would just be a passing convo but because on here the world and her DH can wade in and it polarises opinions so it seems like more of a rant.

MN would be really dull without ridiculous rants

mumblechum · 27/07/2010 21:02

I've been away for a couple of weeks as well and notice in the last day or so threads with LIVID!!! and FURIOUS!!! in the titles, then when you read them you just think, wtf? disappointing.

AgentZigzag · 27/07/2010 21:10

Mumble, but if threads said 'I'm a tad miffed about DH' or 'MIL is vexing me rather' people wouldn't bother clicking on the thread to find out.

But if someone puts they're furiously livid I'm nosey enough to want to know why

mumblechum · 27/07/2010 21:16

But it is disappointing when it turns out that it's because they can't find the right colour shoes or some such wankery

Rockbird · 27/07/2010 21:18

Exactly, especially when I'm on the iPhone I look for a good long thread to settle down with to save all the arsing about going back to active convos. So I find one where the op is 'aibu to be incandescent with rage over this' and it turns out that someone in the office ate the last fig roll or something.

OP posts:
wukter · 27/07/2010 21:23

I would definitely read a thread entitled 'DH is vexing me rather'.

I'd be thrilled to see what the loveable rogue has gotten up to next.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 27/07/2010 21:24

People just chat and talk about the little things in life. And the things that bug you are high on the list of stuff that come to mind. And it's good to have a whinge about the little things that bug you but which you know are really no big deal in The Grand Scheme Of Things. And, of course, people reply or not. I think that people should be - and feel - free to chat about whatever they want, and people should be and feel free to respond or not. So what if folks are whinging? It's all just meaningless chat at the end of the day.

AgentZigzag · 27/07/2010 21:34

I always want to make more use of let me google that for you

It's not that hard to open up a new tab and look for the answer to some mundane question (esp about alien sex FFS)

wukter · 27/07/2010 21:37

Oh, Agent, I always think that's a bit arsey. Was funny the first couple of times.
Lots of people trust MN more than google, much more succinct.

Doodleydoo · 27/07/2010 21:40

when you are up the duff, hot, with a ratty 2.5 year old because Mummy won't play horsey at 37 weeks and with strange men destroying your home around you, even if all of the above are of your own volition you are allowed to find the small things moanable about. Especially if your RL friends are all on holiday!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 27/07/2010 21:40

Of course people can google. But maybe they want to chat.

I think that most of the time, what is actually talked about is not the point. People just want to talk. Make a connection. So they ask a question they could probably find the answer to elsewhere, so they have a whinge about something, so they have a chat about nothing at all. Because the subject isn't the point. the subject is not the reason they are on here.

AgentZigzag · 27/07/2010 21:42

I agree wukter, it is very dismissive, and perhaps the person just wanted to chat.

I just wanted to do a link to alien sex

wukter · 27/07/2010 22:25

Lol agent.
Mn is an education.

TiggyD · 27/07/2010 22:45

I just have to say how absolutely disgusted I am. It's appalling. To think we could be in a situation like this in the 21st century just 40 years after we put a man on the moon. If scientists can create Froot Shoots why can they get their heads together and work out a solution. It's no point blaming the government who just say "It's the previous government's fault" and that it's a global situation. I blame Keith Chegwin. There hasn't been such a massive to-do since the summer of 1367! Maybe one of the ways to get things back on track would be to use a solution to the current crisis, or blame the Americans, or woodworm. Either way something must be done. NO! Something must be done. I think we should start by exiling the next poster.

I really am very disgusted.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 27/07/2010 22:51

I agree with ORM I think it's the heat.

Can't help but wish the weather would break in these parts as have spent quite a bit of the evening standing in front of the fridge, and I'm not anywhere near pregnant nor being disturbed by restless toddlers!

AgentZigzag · 27/07/2010 22:52

Fuck yeah Tiggy

Rockbird · 27/07/2010 23:18

We didn't land on the moon, t'was all a load of bollocks. Buzz Aldrin told my dad.

disclaimer: that's a lie. What he actually said was fuck off

But the moon thing, naah.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 27/07/2010 23:37

Rockbird - really? Buzz Aldrin told your Dad to fuck off? [gullible emoticon]

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2010 23:41

sometimes the inconsequental things are a cover for the real shit that is hitting their lives

14hourstillbedtime · 28/07/2010 01:04

Yup, ivykaty couldn't agree with you more... DH works 11 hours a day, no family nearby, 3 year old and a 3 month old who is a serious shit sleeper and won't take a bottle... I'm practically going out of my mind so I post about rubbish cos it's something to talk about other than the baby.

And then get flamed and feel more crap

Right, hey ho, as you were....
