to ask my neighbours to take it inside

My DH thinks I am unreasonable, but I don't! We live in a quiet development, no traffic noise, is deadly quiet at night - perfect! Last night our neighbours two doors away decided at 11.45pm to go and sit in the garden and drunkenly cackle with laughter and talk really loudly about Toy Story 3. They woke me up and having to get up at 6aM today, wasn't that impressed. I thought they might just be out for a smoke and would go back in after 10 mins but they settled in. So I (very nicely) called out the bathroom window "Would you mind keeping it down a bit please" to which they relied "Oops sorry" and went it. My DH said I shouldn't have said anything, but it isn't like it was the weekend and their voices must have been loud to everyone in our houses and flats as we are round a communal garden. Anyway in your learned MN opinion, was IBU?

No, YANBU

Fine to ask people politely to take it inside after 11pm.

You were very polite, they were sorry, end of.

YANBU. They'd probably rather be told than not - it's hard to realize how much noise carries.
