Just had scissors and selotape snatched away-I might be mad and stab someone

I was just in the British bookshops and stationers, my son and I bought an art set, card and wrapping paper. I asked the assistant if I could borrow some selotape and scissors so I could wrap the present up (it's been a busy week and I ran out of time). He was very sweet and directed me to another counter (shop was almost empty). I was just finishing off when this bearded man prob the manager steamed over and took scissors/tape away. He didn't explain. I asked why and he said I might stab someone??? WTF how many mass murderers buy a birthday card and wrapping paper.
I disagreed with him and this old lady started pipping up that it was fair enough and she agreed with him. My poor son was mortified and I just can't believe how petty someone could be.
Was I out prodded??

I think you should have punched him to prove that you need neither scissors or selotape to hurt someone!!

BythewayItsStillMe · 18/07/2010 16:15

PosieParker! Thats brilliant!

Glint, he was being ridiculous, but unfortunately, health and safety has its tight grip on just about everyone these days.

UnholyMoley · 18/07/2010 16:16

I suspect if you were of the stabbing persuasion you would probably have come along ready prepared with your own knife rather than hope that a kindly shopkeeper would lend you some scissors.

fernie3 · 18/07/2010 16:21

wow I do this all the time in the post office!
I wrap the thing to be posted because I am too lazy to buy the wrap go home wrap it and go back. Noone has ever said anything and they have a little shelf - I thought thats what the shelf was for

ISNT · 18/07/2010 16:37

That is just bizarre.

He is just a jobs worth. In retail staff are taught not to leave a potential weapon lying around, a sad but necessary precaution. But they can use discretion and allow a person to use them if they think it is appropriate.
Sometimes a little power does strange things to people.

DaisySteiner · 18/07/2010 16:46

I always credited bearded men with more common sense tbh.

ROFL daisy

Where I work we're only allowed to give customers child safety scissors and if they want things stapling we have to do it for them, lol

what is this world coming too, i wonder what would have happen had you also bought a pair of scissors, and used them in their shop to cut your paper?

Flisspaps · 18/07/2010 19:14

nannyl Just what I was thinking too...
