to be really angry about being (nearly) blocked in

I took my 5 month old to our baby swimming class held at a hotel pool.

Parking was in the hotel car park (£ an hr charges). When I finished the class I reached my car to realise someone had nearly blocked me in. They had not parked in a marked bay and had just parked against the wall.

It was peeing down which didn't help and the car was very close to scraping down the right side of my car. I wasn't prepared to risk it but didn't have anyone with me to check how close I was.

Called my hubbie and got him to find number of hotel, call reception with reg no of other car and to explain/rant on my behalf.

Concierge came up and talked me out of space.

My rant comes from the explanation of the hotel that people ignore the 'car park full' sign at entrance.

Surely they could stop the ticket coming out and the barrier coming up when it's full?!
Ofcourse not - they want to get their massive parking fees and are not that bothered about where cars go. Must be against H & S to have cars all over the place?

Can I call hotel and rant or am I being unreasonable?!!

Maybe the car park wasn't actually full, and the other car was just badly parked? You're home now antway, forget about it.

you were not blocked in and could weel have walked backinto the hotel yourself and found someone to back you out of a space if you are not happy about reversing on your own.

Obviously inconsiderate to park excessively close to another car.

I do think it's a bit lame though to ring your husband to get him to call the hotel when you were actually in the hotel car park!

See what you mean but I couldn't get out without help and it took ages. Small baby in car, needed feeding etc?

erm, tbh Id be more annoyed that I wasnt a good enough driver to manoeveure myself out.

If I had asked my dh to call the hotel when I was in the car park he'd have rightly refused.

i would ring them and complain that they continue to allow cars in after the car park is full. i dont understand why you couldn't go in and find someone to talk you out of the space yourself.

Yeap - what all the others said.

Personally I'd have fed baby in car and then gone back into hotel and been very embarassed that I couldn't have reversed out.

It was raining really hard, baby was asllep in car, didn't have waterproof cover for car seat.

Couldn't have rained any harder and was pretty soaked.

On 6th floor of carpark and hotel was in another building.

Hubbie was short cut really.

But see what you mean!

id let it go. sounds a pain, but TBH, i would have got out of the space without having to be assisted by the concierge.

DON'T call the hotel and rant.

It's NOT their fault a visitor to the hotel parked where they did, and the hotel helped you get out of the space.

You were not actually blocked in, it was merely not as straightforward a manoeuvre as you are used to.

You may be a really expert driver, it may have been really hard to get out of the space, you could be a reversingly challenged driver.... (new technical term, honest)...we don't know...

If you object so much to the parking charges, you could always do what I did, and take the bus to the baby swimming classes.... and I don't do buses, I was (at the time) a confirmed London dwelling car driver.

Therefore, sorry, but YABU.

Next time reverse into space - should always do this really or at least thats what I seem to recall from a safety perspective.

I do appreciate it was annoying though.

tracebath - it isn't always possible to reverse into a space in a carpark due to pillars and trying to open the door - this can mean you have to park nose in the trough so to speak to aviod pillars of multilevel carparks

But nearly isn't blocked and its not the other drivers fault the hotel hasn't got enough spaces

YABU. You need to learn how to reverse properly and to manoeuvre your car. Reversing in is nearly always the best option. You can always wind the window down to get the baby in and out of the car seat if space is tight.

There's no shame in asking for help when the space is difficult but surely you could have rung the hotel and asked nicely if there was anyone who could help you? You don't need your DH to do that for you.

i took about 10 minutes to get our work van out of the garage the other day. must have looked a prize prat but there was literally 2 inches either side

YANBU to be really angry. I would have been, too. But you should be cross with the twat who blocked you in and not with the hotel.

Pillars in multi-storey carparks are horrible.

WRT only being "nearly" blocked in, I don't think that's the point. Even the most competent among us sometimes scrape cars, with the possible exception of those people that load cars onto ships for a living (I watched a TV programme about this, in awe ). And it doesn't bloody help what wankers park like, er, wankers.

Some of you have really nice husbands . A lovely husband would help you, no matter how daft the thing was you needed help with because he loves you.

I can see why the OP rang her DH, much easier than dragging a baby out in the rain all that way (mind you, might have been wise to put that in the OP as I did think, 'what a twat, why not go back into the hotel herself!').

OP - I can see that it was bloody annoying and it was lucky you didn't have another child to collect from somewhere - but honestly, shit happens. It's not the hotels fault that some twat all but blocked you in.

Have a think about whether you should have been able to get yourself out of that space or not and if so, do something about it.

Just have a glass of wine and forget about it

Oh - and that your DH for being lovely, as you can see - not all DH's are like that?!

My DH wouldn't understand what I was calling for if I'd phoned to say I was almost blocked in. He certainly wouldn't agree to phone the hotel for me. He must be a saint!

The other driver was maybe a little inconsiderate but YABU

I imagine the OP didn't have the hotel's number, which is why she asked her DH to call for her. That's fair enough, imo.

True re reversing into spaces but that is standard safety advice from organisations like the Suzy Lamplugh trust.
