to not let the meter reader in

Sooo several weeks ago I had a knock at the door at 8.45am, not the best time in our house, i.e wheres my school bag, have you packed my lunch, can't find my shoes-car keys etc. It was the meter reader, meters are in the garage so I franticly start looking for keys, can't bloody find them so I apologise to Mr meter reader who starts tutting and walks away from house shaking his head. I made a complaint to his area managaer who said, " there waas nothing he could do because customers can lie" and his only suggestion was to not let the next reader in and send in my own reading to gas and electric company. So guy knocks today to read meters, I say no, we'll send in our own readings, he says I'll have to let someone in eventually but I send him on his way. I feel a bit like I'm cutting off my own nose to spite my face, but still feel cross that these old gadgies feel they can come into our homes and behave in whichever way they see fit. What do you all think ?

Why don't you want to let them read the meter/ It takes 5 seconds.

muddleduck · 14/07/2010 15:37

YABD

YANBU. Good on you. I think in theory they are supposed to write to you beforehand telling you when they are visiting. Anyone can put a high vis jacket on, flash a badge and claim they are meter readers.

scurryfunge · 14/07/2010 15:41

I think you need to get over it now

Colliecross · 14/07/2010 15:42

YANBU I hate their surprise visits.

clothhanky · 14/07/2010 15:43

Your probably right, do you think a vvv large glass of wine tonight will ease the pain

Oh yes,

potplant · 14/07/2010 15:47

You complained about him because he was a bit huffy after you kept him waiting?

Calm down and get over it. Just let them in next time!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 14/07/2010 15:47

You only need to let them in once a year - I learned on here!

PandaEis · 14/07/2010 16:09

we had a run of about 6 weeks where we had someone knocking to read the meter at least once a week i let the first 2 in but after that i said no. i was told by the reader that it was illegal for me to prevent him from entering my property and i would be cut off i worked for scottish power at the time so i gave him a mouthful for being so rude and complained. by law they are only entitled to access your property ONCE a year. and then they have to announce their visit in writing.

i think YANBU as it is an invasion of your own personal space that has already been presumably done within the past 6 months to year if you dont want them in your home then put the reading in your window or ring the provider up with your reading

I ring their office to check they are who they say they are.
But then I did ring a police station when stopped at a police check point with just a police sign, unmarked car [with blue lights]and two men in ordinary cloths with police high vis jackets before I left them check my car.
A tad paranoid me?
