In the park with DS today, saw 2 people with dogs off leads; one of them released her dogs from the leads underneath the sign that says "dogs should be kept on leads at all times"! FFS. DS is afraid of dogs (we are working on it, as I was too and really don't want him to be) and I think I should be able to take him to the park without worrying about dogs running around scaring him. (As it happened he wasn't too bothered as the dogs were sniffing around and not interested in anyone, but that's not the point.)
I know I'll end up being flamed by the dog-lovers among us, but to be fair, there are signs up that state dogs should be on their leads in the park.
I was all for emailing the council to complain earlier but that would BU wouldn't it?

Woweee. 126 messages and I don't think anyone has said OP was BU for expecting dogs to be on a lead when a sign requested it.

Wow I'm amazed at the number of posts!
I can assure everyone that this wasn't posted under the guise of being a dog-hating thread. I just thought venting on MN would probably be better than a hot-headed email to the council (which I admitted was a bit unreasonable in my OP).
And FWIW my toddler is always on a wrist strap when out and about for his own safety, and has been taught that he must stay close/sit still when in a cafe/restaurant.

ynbu - if it's dogs on leads then they should be kept on leads. People need to know if there's a dog running all about

... On the whole I usually feel good about disobeying official signs.. nothing riles me like a "no ball games" sign. There is something about petty officialdom and rules that gets right up my nose, so athough I posted earlier that the dog should be on a lead the sanctimonious harping of the sign lovers on here just makes me think that another time I'd just trust little Henry to behave himself.

swanandduck · 15/07/2010 16:00

It is not 'sanctimonious' to say that dogs should be kept on a lead where instructed for the benefit of other members of the public who don't like dogs. To be honest I find it a bit pathetic when adults say 'oh I never obey signs me. I'm just a rebel, I am'. Grow up.

when I was about 12 I rode my horse on the common, where there was a sign saying no horses, a man got hold of m,y horse and wouldn't let me go, he let me go home about 10 o'clock at night, my parents were worried sick. Thing is I knew I was allowed to be there as I had been doing work for tyhe local bridleways association and discovered that were i was was a valid bridleway, the sign was put up by a local person who didn't want horses on the common. The next day my dad took the sign down (and made me a jump for my horse with it).
A sign is not always truthful.

I don't think the signs in parks are put up by individuals who don't want dogs running around the park. The fact that some nutter did this when you were 12, does not negate the points made on this thread.
