Is a waste of time? If people want to wear it then they will. Let them be!

unknown language only to you Melika. Where you flying to Spain where you moaned about not being able to buy English Food!

Animation · 13/07/2010 10:44

Burkas are an insult to women. Men are behind this practice, we all know that - it's men who are controlling women. In a democracy we don't walk around wearing masks. Wearing a full veil damages the dignity of women and the concept of an open society. Women may say they have a choice but I don't buy it. Why would a woman choose to wear a mask and be covered from head to toe in black on lovely sunny day?

IFancyKevinELevin · 13/07/2010 10:44

Unknown language? To who? Swaying, in an economy class seat?

Yes Christians do sing out loud don't they, don't they pray out loud in Church?

Get over yourself, well don't actually, the more you type the more bigotry is uncovered....

megapixels · 13/07/2010 10:45

So what do you think her motive was then melika? Do you think she was trying to show you that she's the boss and can blow you up with the bomb strapped on her at any time, OR, do you think she was just a very religious (and quite inconsiderate, if she was audible) woman simply minding her own business and spending her time on the plane how she wants?

Well said Leonie! Look you lot who sit there waiting for an innocent like me to say anything what isn't PC, bog off. I won't go to your level and swear at you, I am above that. Here's ten pence and phone someone who cares what you think.

scaryteacher · 13/07/2010 10:46

I taught RE, so when we were looking at Islam, the dress codes came up. I let the students try on the burqa, and none were keen.

My colleague said it was an empowering garment; I disagree, a pair of killer heels or black boots with buckles empowered me far more.

megapixels · 13/07/2010 10:48

Leonie - A man can hide behind one. The security issue is the only thing I think is worth considering in the burka issue. But then I don't think it matters if it's a man or woman behind it, just that they're not hiding anything else there.

Actually, flying to Dublin to see my terrorist friends, ha ha!

megapixels · 13/07/2010 10:49

How do killer heels empower you?

I saw a news item where the reporter said that less than 1900 women out of a population of 62million people in France where a burka. Its fear of Islam that is driving this law as hardly anyone wears this item of clothing.

Also banning a piece of clothing sets a dangerous precedent. If the government can successfully ban one item of clothing, they can ban others. If people start complaining about goths, tattoos, hoodies, men who were socks with sandals then they can be banned too and nobody would be able to challenge it. I think a democratic country should allow people to wear what they want.

msrisotto · 13/07/2010 10:51

LOL that kiler heels are more empowering than a burqa. Both are oppressive to women IMO. High heels damage leg muscles and feet, are often excruciatingly painful but expected in most situations i.e. social and work. And men aren't expected to wear them. Heels are FAR from empowering, you've just been brainwashed by society, just like women who wear burkhas and niqabs.

megapixels · 13/07/2010 10:51

That's true twopeople.

tethersend · 13/07/2010 10:52

I disagree with the wearing of the veil of any kind

I also want to live in a country where there are things I disagree with.

IFancyKevinELevin · 13/07/2010 10:53

You see for me, killer heels (also invented by a man) not empowering at all, can't walk properly, hurt my back, feel like Mrs Doubtfire....or a 2 year old tottering around in my mums' shoes.

Women can wear killer heels under a bhurka if they like though, can't they? When I worked for Oasis franchise, the biggest sellers in Saudi were mini skirts and crop tops. Could've been the ex-pat wives but we were still v. surprised.

Melika if you don't care for others criticism, why post on here? Simple. Everyone has the right to criticise my posts, I'm not getting defensive. It's. A. Debate.

melikalikimaka · 13/07/2010 10:53

Seriously, it does put people off posting anything. I'm a catholic, what do you think of that then. MEGA, SHADEOF....ETC

megapixels · 13/07/2010 10:54

Why should we think anything of the fact that you are Catholic? How is it relevant?

Also I think the level of women wearing it in the UK is highly exaggerated. I live in East London in an area heavily populated by Muslims and seeing a woman in a full burka is so rare that I actually double take when I see one. They more often than not just wear head scarves.

msrisotto · 13/07/2010 10:57

Do people who have a problem wtih the Burkha, have a problem with the Niqab? I don't see a big difference between the two.
