My original story was
My bag of mixed peppers contained far more green than stated on the packet 34%green 33%red and 33% orange

I am sorry i dont know how to do the link thing

Anyway a few days ago we got a new bag and I divided the peppers into there colours and low and behold the green peppers came out at about 60% with the remaining 40% red and orange

Are the supermarkets allowed to con us like this? I dont want to take them back and complain as they might think I am a bit sad

It just makes me so cross

Agreed, Quality, but there's a premium paid for Lamb, not Mutton, and given the 2% difference it really ought not imply it is just one type of meat.

If you go into a supermarket and find two packs of (let's say, for sake of example) beef burgers, priced the same, and in small print one indicated 80% beef, the other 95% beef, would you still be happy to buy the 80% pack, perhaps because of the brand being known to you ?

If you found out the difference later, would you not care ?

Quality · 11/07/2010 22:53

It depends what the other % was made of, so that's not a good example, mutton and lamb is still the same animal, so it really wouldn't bother me, as long as it wasn't 51% lamb, 49% dog I would live with it

But wrt the pepper thing, I am serious in that it is the overall mix that is percentaged (?) so one bag cannot a good sample make!

serin · 11/07/2010 23:12

Wonder what he's up to now??

Best larf i've had in ages!

Imisssleeping · 11/07/2010 23:51

Didn't realise jasonthunderpants was a man although the clue was in the title !
Which supermarket were they from ?
Maybe we can all do our own count and report back (cept I don't buy frozen peppers)
i buy frozen chopped onions though if that helps.

can someone please link to the original thread?....

just a little something i noticed whilst reading this thread....

packaged food = dodgy percentages

fresh food = not human/dog/monkey!

stressheaderic · 12/07/2010 00:27

The green ones are my favourite. Just thought I'd throw that in.

thumbwitch · 13/07/2010 06:30

I cannot believe I have been missing out on these threads! love 'em, especially the potential for Jason to be RUddyNOrah's DH

Jason - very good.

But in the meantime, yes, take it up with the food company - they are ripping you off, man! Stand up for your rights - demand your fair share of red and orange peppers.

stainesmassif · 13/07/2010 07:14

Keep up the good work, Jason (re the peppers, obvs) someone needs to keep an eye on the supermarkets.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/07/2010 07:45

Ruddynorah would know if Jason were her husband: There can't be two men in the area who call their willies "Keith".

Jason, buy fresh peppers and slice them yourself. Quicker and tastier than counting the bits of frozen pepper, you mad, mad person.

MichaelBublesPillow · 13/07/2010 08:32

Jason, that would naff me off too as I hate green ones - they are the poor relation of peppers in my opinion, proof of which is how many they bung in the Value bag of fresh peppers!

TrillianAstra · 13/07/2010 08:46

The thing is, we do not believe that they have a big vat of 1/3 red 1/3 yellow 1/3 green, because noone in the history of frozen mixed peppers has ever bought a bag with more red in it.

You should stop buying the frozen peppers Jason. You have already established that they are rubbish. Anyway, why would you want even 34% green? You want 0% green.

SomeGuy · 13/07/2010 09:08

contact trading standards and get them to dole out a massive fine.

hannahsaunt · 13/07/2010 09:13

If it makes you feel any less isolated, I emailed Sainsbury's because when making chocolate cake I had occasion to weigh the chocolate bar and measure the liquid content of my tub of sour cream both of which were found to be lacking by 20g and 50ml respectively. They were very apologetic and sent a £5 voucher (and promised to be more vigilant on the weighing front).

I felt vindicated .

thumbwitch · 13/07/2010 09:16

oo, hannah - that's been a hot topic in Australia recently, supermarkets cutting a few grammes/ml here and there - it's fraudulent trading or something, cheating the customer! They want to be very very careful about that kind of thing.. well spotted!

Jux · 13/07/2010 09:19

DD likes green pepper, and won't eat red or orange. Send me your extra green and I'll pass them on.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 13/07/2010 09:25

You need to have some sort of pepper exchange program with some other MNters.

SomeGuy · 13/07/2010 11:15

I occasionally weigh the 50g bags of chilis (50p) in Sainsburys and they come up as 60 or 70 grams typically.

SwansEatQuince · 13/07/2010 11:32

I'm going to name and shame.

Tesco's Cheese and Onion puffs have a single piece of onion in them. This is why they are not named cheese and onions.

If it was medieval times, the storekeeper would be ducked in the village pond.

Jasonthunderpants · 13/07/2010 11:38

Well done mners, let keep our eyes peeled and wits about us,in these hard times we dont want ripping of as well.
As one supermarket says
"every little helps" but who are they helping?
us or them

Ps I do like green peppers (fresh) in fajitas

OP posts:
Honeydragon · 13/07/2010 18:19

How come you hardly ever get a green pepper in the bag of 3 mixed peppers in the fresh aise??? Are they putting them all in Jason's shopping?

I have to pay EXTRA for a single green pepper. I tell you there is a fucking pepper conspiracy going on here.

Jasonthunderpants · 13/07/2010 19:05

@Honeydragon
That sound like Heaven. The little green buggers are even in the bags of fresh peppers in my supermarket

Is it a conspirecy by the supermarkets to drive me insane?

OP posts:
Honeydragon · 13/07/2010 19:10

You are in yorkshire
I am in the S.E

There is a north south pepper divide! You get all the green ones and can have nice fajitas and we have all the red and orange and have nice pizzas!!!!!

SagacityNell · 13/07/2010 19:17

There are never any red ones in the multi packs here. All Green and orange (or orange and green on one pepper)

Jasonthunderpants · 13/07/2010 19:18

Interesting

Calling all southerners

Do you have a green pepper shortage down there?

Do the supermarkets see green peppers as northern food? like brown ale, tripe, lard, ruhbarb(but i do believe that is becoming popular down south) etc
