AIBU to think that anyone who has bought one of these is just stupid. FACT!

SloanyPony · 10/07/2010 21:50

No, but if they have bought it because they think it is necessary or it makes them a better parent , well, then they are stupid.

dixiechick1975 · 10/07/2010 21:51

DD aged 4 say it advertised and was delighted when we saw it in the supermarket. I bought one, think it was on half price offer.

Ideal for her as she was born with only one hand (like Cerrie on Cbeebies) and can't manage an ordinary push down bottle alone.

For other children I can see the novelty value may encourage more hadwashing.

Stupid..I don't think so. Planning to buy a few more!

IFancyKevinELevin · 10/07/2010 21:53

Yes but think about germs around the children! OH MY GOD THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!
WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN

After seeing my 8 month old pull a huge cobweb clad, spider riddled dust bunny from behind my nan's radiator and chew on it contentedly while I was on the loo, I kind of gave up the whole sterilisation paranoia.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 10/07/2010 21:56

Crazy- so what if you touch a germy soap dispenser? So what if it's covered in all sorts of terrible diseases? You are washing your hands straight after no? Which is the whole point? I just don't get it TBH, they are just making things up to worry about to get us to spend more.

Good grief, what about the taps, they harbour more bacteria (unless they are automatic), or the door handle on the way out, or the light switch, or the lock on the door, or the button on your trousers, or your belt buckle.

I hate scare-mongering like this and anyone who buys into it are as daft as these companies are sly.

scottishmummy · 10/07/2010 21:57

hot water, any liquid soap suffices for adequate cleansing.nowt else needed

piprabbit · 10/07/2010 22:03

I have been using this advert as an example to my DD. I'm teaching her to think about adverts critically and to spot the flaws in their arguments.

Even she understands (at 6yo) that germs aren't really the issue when you are already in the process of washing your hands.

loubielou31 · 10/07/2010 22:07

I'm sorry, one handed people aside for whom I can see a genuine need. Everytime the advert comes on the T.V. I can feel my insides curling up with rage. "FACT, your soap pump could harbour bacteria"

BUT YOU'RE GOING TO WASH YOUR HANDS WITH THE SOAP YOU'VE JUST PUT ON THEM AND THEREFORE WASH AWAY ANY BACTERIA THAT ALMOST CERTAILNLY DIDN'T COME FROM YOUR SOAP PUMP!

IDIOTS!

scottishmummy · 10/07/2010 22:09

most microbial flora removed by hot water and soap.no need for fancy branded products

loubielou31 · 10/07/2010 22:09

Thank you, I feel a little better although may need to have a little rant about the cash for gold adverts in a few days time, I blame the heat.

OP posts:
Onestonetogo · 10/07/2010 22:26

YANBU, it irritates me how it taps into parents' fears. If I was a cashier I wouldn't be able to make a remark everytime I saw one of those at the till. Silly, silly people.

IFancyKevinELevin · 10/07/2010 22:43

loubielou31 one of my many problems is too much gold lying around the house.

Everytime I trip on that bullion by the back door I curse, I really do.

If only there was somewhere to send it, for cash.....

vicbar · 10/07/2010 22:52

That advert drives me mad and I find myself shouting at the tv. Surely if you touch the dispenser to dispense the soap you are washing your hands afterward and so if the top is germy it doesnt matter as your not going to touch it unless you are washing your hands.

cocolepew · 10/07/2010 22:57

I bought one, I don't care about germs, but it makes a very satisfying whirring noise when you use it [shallow]

piprabbit · 10/07/2010 23:05

Also, does it not force you to use the amount of product that the manufacturer thinks you should be using instead of what you actually need?

katsh · 10/07/2010 23:08

Having seen this thread I now know what my dd was talking about earlier today when she told me that our soap pump was harbouring dangerous bacteria! Won't be buying one

LynetteScavo · 10/07/2010 23:09

I want one.

What does it do?

Where can I get one?

SalFresco · 10/07/2010 23:12

It's silly. When I was little, there was soap and water, dishcloths you washed in hot water, and milton fluid. Now everything is anti-bacterial, and yet somehow also dirtier. How?

pinkyp · 10/07/2010 23:16

i'd get one for the novelty, thats pretty much it

nickschick · 10/07/2010 23:20

My mum used to wash our faces with the dish cloth .....she also used the lick and spit method in the school playground .

She was also of the belief that socks turned inside out were clean.

My nanna (her mum) gave my Ds half a bar of chocolate my Grandad had left- Grandad had been dead since 1983.

Im still alive.

timetosmile · 10/07/2010 23:22

My 9yr old ds was rolling on the floor in hysterics as he explained that surely he'd would immediately wash all the other people's germs OFF?
He also wants to know if the bacteria that survive in volcanos are also the ones that live in spilled curry on the cooker, and if not, why all the fuss? (anyone seen that ad?!)

CakeandRoses · 11/07/2010 00:04

Ha! MIL has one of these

Katisha · 11/07/2010 00:18

What about the taps?

They must be HEAVING with bacteria - we need taps that come on by themselves as well, surely?

piprabbit · 11/07/2010 00:23

My MIL has special anti-bac handwash that is reserved for my DCs. Not sure if it is to protect them from other people's bugs or because she thinks the children are inherently grubbier.

CJ80 · 11/07/2010 09:54

ha ha ha - this thread is brilliant! This is exactly how I feel about the soap dispenser. I won't be buying one either, though I can see how they may be useful in some circumstances.

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 10:02

As I said on the other thread about this, I have normal pump soap dispensers but DD2 is very small for her age (ok she is absolutely tiny) and she really struggles to reach up and push down the top of the soap dispenser.

I bought a lovely china refillable dispenser to match the bathroom because she tried to push the top down, knocked the thing flying and it smashed into a bazillion bits on the floor.

Also, because of her age, she is too big to want to be helped, she finds it quite humiliating to have to be helped and is very independent and would rather do things for herself.

Therefore, I bought one.
