AIBU to think that anyone who has bought one of these is just stupid. FACT!

OP posts:
CoronaAndLime · 11/07/2010 10:18

Well I think we can let you off Knockraven

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 10:21

Corona, she's 8 but wearing age 3-4 clothes. Tiny.

But there is nothing WRONG with her, she's just small.

But its hard for her to do some stuff, and I do get weird looks when I tell people her age.

(and we are planning to take the old 3 wheeler to the zoo because her legs are just too short to walk the whole way and yes I know I should make her walk and I know she's 8 etc etc)

Knockraven,

tell 'people' to f the f off and mind their own.

Have a lovley time at the zoo

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/07/2010 10:26

piprabbit - my DH has also been very keen to educate our children about the half-truths/untruths and exaggerations in adverts.

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 10:29

Yeah well the zoo has been on the cards for a while but DD1 broke her leg two weeks ago so it will have to be after she is out of the wheelchair......

cocolepew · 11/07/2010 10:34

Knockraven my DD1 was always very small for her age, and for some reason people needed to comment on it. One day a woman in the chemist was talking to both DDs and made a really big fuss after asking DD if she was starting school soon. DD replied she was going into P4 and the lady kept going on and on about how small she was and what was wrong with her and how would she reach the desk .

DD looked at her and calmly said "I might be small but hopefully I'll grow. You're very rude and I don't think you'll change".

cheezcurl · 11/07/2010 10:36

soap and water very often do not suffice as most people have very poor handwashing technique... having said that this inane product will not solve this problem, and since improving washing technique is not going to make anyone lots of money they will continue to bring out pointless crap like this for us to spend our money on...

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 10:38

coclepew - that's exactly like what we get, I find it really frustrating.

One of my best friends is a paediatrician and he is keeping an eye on her, but she is just SMALL there's nothing wrong, she's just small.

Wish she had the guts to say what your DD did!

cocolepew · 11/07/2010 10:40

Her best one was when she told a woman "Being small is better than being fat"

She is 12 now and wearing age appropriate clothes but still looks small coming out of High school, but all her circle of friends are small too.

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 10:48

I just hate the assumption in the OP that all people who buy this thing are stupid.

So, OP, Yes YABU because sometimes there are valid reasons for buying it (not because of germs on the top of the dispenser or falling for the advertising)

Cocolepew - I was small too and I've ended up 5ft2, I just kept growing when everyone else stopped, so I hope she will do the same. But it is frustrating, and she's so independent but some stuff is hard, hence the dispenser because she doesn't want to have to have a toddler step up thing.

But, apparently according to the OP, that makes me stupid.

oldmum42 · 11/07/2010 10:57

I want to shout at the tv when this ad is on, it's so stupid! OK, so you don't need to touch the soap pump, but unless you have also fitted an expensive no-touch tap system to your sink, (clearly not the case with the taps in the advert!), it's pretty pointless - you switch the tap on with your germy hands, so will, shock/horror, contaminate yourself again when you turn off the tap.

These ads are designed to sell through guilt (you are a bad mother if you don't buy our expensive product) and prey on your natural desire to do the best by your family.

Soap and water is fine. Non anit-bacterial soap pumps are prob a good idea, but no need to go for expensive hands free ones, and anti-bacterial cleaning products can be a really BAD idea. Triclosan in particular is nasty stuff - many people are allergic to it (2 out of my family of 5), to the point where they have to avoid washing with anything other than water in public loos/cafes etc, as the dispensers are never lablled, and Triclosan upsets the natual balance of the skins "good bacteria"
and this can lead to skin infections due to overgrown of "bad" skin bugs. Also Triclosan in cloths/chopping boards and surface sprays has been shown to lead to the growth of resistant bacteria in housholds that use a lot of these products - not least because people tend to clean LESS well when using them, as they get a false sense of security spraying this stuff around!

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 11:00

So, am I stupid to have bought the dispenser then?

seeker · 11/07/2010 11:10

So what are the valid reasons for buying this ridiculous bit of scare-mongering hype apart from being too small to reach the soap dispense or having one arm?

borderslass · 11/07/2010 11:13

whats wrong with a bar of soap thats what we use.

iamfabregasted · 11/07/2010 11:17

But the OP said "anyone who has bought one of these is just stupid. FACT!"

lovechoc · 11/07/2010 11:25

we mainly use bars of soap at home - works well enough!

YANBU - i certainly won't be buying to the Dettol new toy that's out just now.

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2010 11:53

But there have been threads raving about the simple human dispensers. I very nearly bought one as I get fed up of the soap dispenser getting muddy/ paint/ just plain mucky.

Also good if you've been preparing chicken, etc.

Bars of soap harbour germs, which is why schools don't use them any more.

bumpsoon · 11/07/2010 11:56

I always want to scream at the tv when these ads come on 'but we are covered inside and out in trillions of bacteria ', they get my goat nearly as much as the lying ,cheating ,scumbag stain remover adverts

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2010 11:58

i'd have one, depends how much they are

seeker · 11/07/2010 11:59

'
But the OP said "anyone who has bought one of these is just stupid. FACT!"

OK - how about "Anyone (except people who have one arm or who are too small to reach the soap dispenser) who bought one of these is just plain stupid. FACT!"

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2010 11:59

" lying ,cheating ,scumbag stain remover adverts "
oh yes. if it doesnt come out in a hot wash, it's not coming out! Mind you i was recently impressed with ace bleach, first time i've ever seen it work though

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2010 12:00

well presumably theres no reason not to buy one either? what's the benefit in the normal ones?
