Humous/Tahini Allergy

PaulineCampbellJones · 25/06/2010 21:11

My 4 year old niece had some humous this evening, first time she has tried it.
Her face and eyes all swelled up, lips went huge and rash all over. Definitely seems like an allergy. Has anyone had experience of an allergy to humous and could it actually be the tahini paste rather than the chickpeas etc? Or maybe just even the preservatives?
Hope someone can help thanks!

chickpeas or sesame .....

certainly needs identifying cause, this needs medical advice really.

go to gp and ask for testing.

sesame? that's a known allergen is't it?

bruffin · 25/06/2010 21:20

DS has been allergic to seseme for many years and recently chickpeas, so could be one or the other.

My SIL is calling the GP to ask them to come out . Is sesame oil used in lots of food prep?

A freind's daughter is allergic to nuts - mostly hazelnuts but all in general and is not allowed to eat them or seeds - tahini is made with sesame seeds and would cause a problem for her. Looks like you need to go and talk to your dr about it.

most likely the sesame

most houmous doesn't contain preservatives (ime anyway)

sesame oil isn't widely used, it's too expensive and strongly flavoured

any prepacked food containing sesame will be labelled as such, the manufacturer has a legal obligation to list a number of allergens, sesame is one of that number.

ds has reacted to something in houmous we avoid chickpeas and sesam now

Most likely the sesame but keep an open mind - could be any of the ingredients. my DS reacts to every ingredient of houmous to some extent: pulses, sesame, garlic, lemon juice and paprika. His reactions vary from hives and facial swelling to just eczema the next day in the case of citrus.
