Formula intolerance question - urgent

jasperc163 · 22/06/2010 18:23

DD2 was mix fed from 6months on Hipp Organic. Seemed to react to pure cows milk (awful nappies) after age 1 so we carried on with formula. Then a month ago at 14 months we stopped formula as she has a mucous problem (though carried on with some cheese etc as we are veggie and its a bigger issue to cut out). No clear change in mucous / chest issue so started formula mixed with oat milk (which is what she has been having) last night. Awful diarrhoea since then.

So I am a bit confused. I assume there is no reason why the gut needs to acclimatise again? Does it clearly indicate it doesn't agree with her (even though it didn't appear to cause diarrhoea when on it from 6 months)? Cant decide if to carry on any longer or go back to oat milk for good (we have about 6 months supply of the organic veggie Hipp - old stuff stockpiled!!).

help pls?

thanks

have now also noticed small pinprick rash on her stomach. She used to get this a bit when on formula - i assumed it was viral. It could all be a coincidence but maybe not and think i should stop....and go back to oat milk?

It sounds a lot Ike a friend's DD who was intolerant to dairy (nappies and rash). IIRC she had soy formula/milk and eventually grew out of it.

thanks :-) just confused as she didn't have the dodgy nappies on it before.

Have given her oat milk tonight so will see if it clears up again

i think if she was intolerant to dairy then you;d have had more of a reaction by now
she has had cow's milk formula since 6 months, and presumably other dairy once on solids. she eats cheese ok
cutting out formula didn't result in any change in mucus/chest issue

i would imagine the diarrhoea is coincidental.

hi thisisyesterday
I know she has a mild intolerance - cant cope with cows milk (DD1 had intolerance til nearly 4 but could eat cheese from about 2, but not drink milk - she was on Neocate as it was an acute issue). Reaction to cows milk was exactly same as we have had today since starting the formula - hence my confusion. Also this odd stomach rash that she had quite alot when on formula. Agree, could be coincidence but its amazing timing.

What i was confused about is if she could be reacting to it more strongly because she has been off it for a month? Maybe more like a lactose intolerance (v low levels in cheese etc)?

Suppose I will try again when we get back from holiday in a week or so.

if she was intolerant to lactose she'd have reacted to your milk too as it contains lactose

ds1 reacted to cow's milk when we made the switch from formula. but we just re-introduced it gradually and he was fine
it wasn't an intolerance, just a reaction to the sudden change

ds2 however, IS intolerant to dairy and can't have it in any form. sadly doesn't seem to be getting any better either.
tbh if you're worried about it then see the GP.

the only way you will know if she is reacting to dairy is to cut it out completely for at least a month and then re-test her

thanks alot,
Looks like i just have to try again more slowly once we are back from hols. Not worried as dealt with a far worse problem with DD1 and she outgrew it. Just don't want to withhold it unnecessarily.
