My daughter and I tend to get a bit sneezy and wheezy with cats but both love them! Of course, the best solution might be not to have one but we'd love to try. Does anyone have any idea of which breeds might be less allergy inducing? I have heard that maybe Bengal or Burmese are worth trying. Of course, we would have to go and visit and stick our faces in their fur to really try this out but just wondering where to start!!

You want the supershort haired ones that are specially bred to be hypoallergenic. Good info here -- they all look quite weird, understand, have to be indoor pets.

Thanks - that's a really interesting website and I don't mind weird looking! Has anyone got one of these cats - Devon Rex or Siberian etc?

It depends a bit on what it is about cats that you are sensitive to. I am allergic to rats - which we used to have as pets for 6 years or so. In the end I was so allergic that we had to stop keeping them . DH managed to source some bald rats (which frankly did not look great!) but I was just as allergic to them as their much cuter hairy cousins. Their pee (boak!) is actually what I am sensitive to and not their fur. ahh...I miss rats

How would you feel about a pig? There is a breed of pigs bred to be small enough to live indoors as pets.

Some people seem to be allergic to male but not female cats as well.

It's often the protein in their saliva or urine that people are allergic to, so the fur/hairless thing is a red herring.
