chick pea allergy?

Is it a common allergy

DS is 14 and allergic to most treenuts, seseme and other seeds, animals, hayfever insect bites, plasters and grown out of peanut allergy. His allergies appeared when he was 4, although the seseme probably started before that.

I don't think he can have had chick peas since he was little and i don't use them to cook with very often. He doesn't have houmos because of the seseme seed.

A few months I made a Jamie Oliver recipe for chicken korma, he said he wasn't keen on it because of the chick peas but didn't really complain of a reaction. Tonight I has some left over in the freezer and gave him some more he only ate a fork full and he has been complaining that it made his mouth feel funny, that he had a stomach ache and he has also been sneezing but then again he has the start of a cold.

looks like another item to add to the list but thankfully I would have thought chickpeas are fairly easy to avoid.

I don't particularly want to take him back to the hospital for tests as he has had other medical problems last year which has meant a few visits, so I often feel like a hypochondriac mum when I fill out his medical forms for trips etc.

chickpeas are a major allergen in the Indian subcontinent where they are a much more common part of the diet than in the UK.

See this article - it explains that different cultures will have different "top" allergens.

if he is allergic to chickpeas you should also be careful about things made with gram flour like bhajia and pakora.

bruffin · 05/05/2010 15:53

Thanks I hadn't thought about the flour!

I will have to check the tesco bhajis as we have those occasionally.

It is not uncommon - chick peas fall into the legume group see here so you should be wary of peas and others. This website was the first I found that talks about other legumes, I'm sure there are better ones! Watch out for chick pea flour in bought foods.

DastardlyorSmugly · 05/05/2010 16:14

My BIL is allergic to everything in the legume group, although peas bring out the worst reaction.

I am allergic to peanuts and legumes (pulses), including chickpeas, so its certainly possible. other posters are right, if he is allergic to chickpeas you would need to avoid gram flour as well.

trixymalixy · 07/05/2010 20:37

Chickpeas are a legume which is the same family as peanuts so perfectly possible to be allergic to it. My DS was allergic to chickpeas, but outgrew it.

bruffin · 07/05/2010 21:28

That's the odd thing, he has grown out of the peanut allergy,

DS1 also has a chickpea allergy, but then is also allergic to peas, peanuts, lentils, beans as well which are probably all related.
