Is this an allergic reaction?

My dentist prescribed me pennicillin today for a gum infection, which I've taken before with no problems. I took one this evening and about 20 minutes later my face became very red and hot, like I was burning up, and I had a rash all over my chest and back. It died down about an hour later, and now is almost, but not quite back to normal.

Is it an allergic reaction? If so, what do I do? Do I stop taking the medicine and wait til Monday to speak to the dentist or try and see an emergency doctor over the weekend to get another prescription?

Thanks. Have done the online NHS Direct thingy as they are mega busy on the phone and don't want to burden them with a non urgent thing. Will see what they say when they call, and / or see out of hours tomorow.

Thanks again.

sounds like an allergic reaction. You need to get a different antibiotic.

There is, I think, a very tiny risk of dental infections progressing to meningitis so be aware of symptoms for that.

Thanks. Can't really do anything til dentist reopens on Monday, but will phone them first thing.
