Red meat and egg allergy - weaning question

noblegiraffe · 30/01/2010 20:17

My DH is allergic to red meat and eggs (throat swells up, lips blister). My DS is five and a half months and I'm starting to think about weaning. Do I need to avoid red meat and eggs with him? If so, when till? Also, do I need to avoid nuts due to the family history of allergies even though it's not a nut allergy?

Also, what should I be looking out for in terms of reactions? Do I need to be really careful about weaning?

Thanks.

I was told I was utterly ridiculous to assume that either dc would have the same allergy as dh or me

as it turns out, dd had milk/egg/soya allergy (when dh has chicken/egg allergy)

just wean very carefully

one new food at a time so you can identify what is causing a problem (if there is one)

I am very out of date as to what is current guidance for introducing foods

I avoided all egg and dairy with my DCs until they could be tested (I'm anaphylactic to both). My GP organised allergy testing at the local hospital.

DS was allergic to both till he was 8. DD is OK with milk but had a reaction to the egg test.

I'm also avoiding MMR/swine flu vaccine with DD as they are both cultured in egg (though there is an egg free swine flu).

Thanks for your comments. I'd not thought about vaccines!

How old do they have to be for allergy testing? I suppose I should talk to the Health Visitor about it.

I don't think you introduce eggs till 1 anyway (check this though as my children are far older now).

I wouldn't go out of your way to avoid but would just not introduce any likely allergens at the start.

So start with pear, carrot, potato, butternut etc. Slowly but surely!

Even with an egg allergy, they can still have the MMR.
