Grrrr......Suncream and excema

I knew that dd3 breaks out in excema if we use a certain hypo allergenic suncream however we have two types of the same cream just with a different coloured lid (Different ingredients), obviosly used the wrong one over the weekend and now covered in a fine excema rash on the whole of her trunk!! can anybody recommend a good emolient as don't want to use steriod reams if I can help it.

DH has eczema on hands, back etc. He uses E45 cream and says the "Anti Itch" version is especially soothing for him.

Diprobase is our favourite emollient as bog standard aqueous cream used to make dd worse. You can get diprobase from the chemist - but you have to ask for it as the pharmacy bit. Cost £11 if you're not buying on prescription - but it should last you about 6 months.

Doh..... it seems not to be bothering her re the itchyness which I thought was very unusual....Just figured out why..I gave her antihystamine this morning for her allergy!!

I like the Emulsifying Ointment or Epaderm. Both come in great big tubs and are like lard.

If her skin gets very red and inflamed though I don't think any ointment will solve the problem. A short course of hydrocortisone clears the problem and is harmless if used infrequently. At least the antihistimines will stop it getting any worse.

BTW, can I ask which sun cream she's OK with? We're currently experimenting with finding the best cream for ds.

I think (hope!!) the suncream she is good with is Ambre Solaire Kids 25 Ultra- moisturising High Protestion Milk (it has an orange lid.I hope they don't change the colours on the lids, It's taken 3 years to find one we can use)

I find ROC and excellent suncream for me with my excema.

And Kcemum, aveeno works wonders on me as emolient.

If she's got a fine rash all over might it be prickly heat? My dd got this all over at the weekend too. She does get eczema too but this isn't eczema.

Sponge,Don't think its prickly heat as it's the same rash that she gets if we use hair detangler, certain frabric conditioners etc, but will ask the chemist to have alook and see what she thinks, thanks

try and get a sunscreen thats para aminobenzoic acid (paba) free as this is a skin irritant mines from neways they do some fantastic products buy online here

My son has had exzema since he was about 4 months(now two and half) we contacted the ezcema helpline and they can send out lots of info about creams and usual triggers. Your doctor can also prescribe this as the suncreams for eczema children is often very expensive. luckily we have found one that works for him.

My twin girls suffer with eczema, e45 also make a sunblock that works for my DDS, very pricey though.

Well we've been to see the G.P today and it's a definate allergic reaction to Ambre Solaire, it has got worse and is itchy and sore. Advised to stop using any A/S sunprotection and to try nivea instead. Lets see how long till she reacts to this one!!

hi kcemum, if you want any other questions answered just type it here and will reply. I have suffered for years and i have to clean in a set way now.

If you are trying a new sunscreen try doing a patch test first or call the manufacturers and ask if they can send out a small sample. I do this all the time for new products as my skin reacts to alot of mainstream products such as bath gels, foams etc.

Thanks JeelyJelly. I've also suffered for all my life and have also got a set ruotine of what I can and can't do/use or eat but I got there by trial and error. We have always been carefull with her skin as we know that she does react to certain things, I could kick myself for using the wrong lotion and hate to see what she's going through as I know how horrible it is.

Just out of interest which one can your son use?

he can use diprobase and diprobath, very few johnsons products (the purple bath one)and only a few wipes. Really careful with his clothes and the washing powder we use and how much we hoover and when.

I get E45 sunscreen on prescription for my little girl. Any bit of sun and she flares up though so difficult to judge whether the cream makes it any worse! One good thing though it lasts all day and doesn't even come off after a scrub in the bath! We are trying Chickweed cream (nice and cold from the fridge) but have resorted to steroid cream to get some sleep I must admit!

kcemum, my dd gets flare ups in her eczema from sun cream and for us, that Ambre Solaire range (especially any of the suncreams that tout themselves as 'milk' creams) give her terrible eczema.

I think you'll have to try a few and see what works. We can have one working for ages and then suddenly it will irritate her. We find Proderm Mousse suncream is good (though isn't 5 stars on the back) and suprisingly, the Boots Soltan Factor 50+ for kids seems to be OK as well. However, as I'm sure you know, everyone reacts differently so I would try a few and see what happens. Poor you - hope she feels better soon.

I've suffered from awful eczema all my life (as has my DH - our baby due in August has no chance of escape!). Anyway, we both used to use Diprobase but sometimes it made it itchier. We both now prefer Cetraben cream. You can buy it at the chemist but you can also get the giant bottles on prescription.

As for suncream... I have a dreadful time with most brands apart from Clinique. but I have to make sure and wash it off before bed otherwise the heat of bed triggers a reaction.

At the moment we seem to have the excema back under control with cortisone and e45 cream, it's not completly gone as you can still see it underneith her skin iykwim.

we seem to be ok with the nivea kids range but haven't applied it yet where her skin has been bad- so time will tell on that one.
