how are peoples babies on weight gain and allergies. MINE V THIN

My ds seems to be allergic to milk. Have been told to try him with nutrimigen yoghurt but his weight gain isnt great. he is breast fed but at 7 months not sure of quality of milk ie fat content. He will not take a bottle. Just need to know if this is common. so dont feel like such a crap mum. Ds very long and thin 91st centile length 9th weight. started on the 75th weight. he was 7 weeks early. any how any support would be great. new mum syndrome going on you always want to try and do your best.

hi donnach. Breast fed babies are often lighter than bottle fed babies and by breast feeding you are giving him the greatest chance of avoiding other allergies and growing out of the milk allergy. You aren't a crap mum you're a great one for feeding longer than most. My eldest (the most allergic, second children often have less problems) dropped down the weight charts too but apart from nut allergy is now healthier than most children At 7 months you can start trying him with a cup although neither of mine took easily to cups.

Hi tatt thanks for that. Ds does take a cup. he plays with it more but does drink about 5- 10 mls. dh wants to put ds on bottles but im not sure. have to go back to wirk in 3 months. Dont want to really, so will have to get onto bottles for nursery. although it seems a shame to get him onto a bottle at ten months to try and get him off one by 12 months. dilemmas of the modern mum. I actaully enjoy breast feeding. mad really but its so easy now. Glad your children are fit and healthy fingers crossed mine will be the same.

My twins were born at 29 weeks.

They are now 17 months old.

Twin1 is a right wee man- butch if you like, walking into everything

Twin2 on the other hand is very small, thin and still under the hospital for investigations.

He tries to walk but is struggling badly, he is in the lowest centile for weight which is also a concern to the docs-not mentioning me and dad.
He is very clever though-mentally i must say

was hoping hospital would discharge on last visit but no success, there again next month to check out his his slow development and weight again, see what they say then, he is constantly getting chest infections also

It must be hard on nnu for long time. Wewere there 4 weeks enouggh oh little man waking must go. we have appt end of the month c wot they say good luck catch ya later dxx

Your breast milk is fine. The fact that he is growing tall (ie making nice long bones) shows this.

My ds is also tall and thin - never had a drop of formula. Perfectly healthy and fit (apart from his allergies).

Being skinny is not an indicator of anything - someone has got to be at the bottom of those charts.

Thanks bobby bob. makes you feel better when you know its normal. Health pros can make you feel so inadequate especially if you little one is not on the 50th centile. Trying to make home yoghurt type thing out of breast milk and cornflour. hope it works. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT

I made Boob cubes which were a lot of fun for ds. Literally EBM in an icecube tray, fun to suck on.

Health pros don't tend to have much allergy training (think of all the stuff they have to cover), but they should be telling you that it's fine to be long and lean - after all it's a body shape we are told is healthier as adults.

At 7 months I wouldn't really mess about trying to make yogurt (unless you really want to), just remember your milk is the most important thing for the first year, and it's best straight from the fridge with all the antibodies etc.

boob cubes sounds great. Have to say yoghurt not bad but definately not the same. Dietician wants me to try formula to make yoghurt but it was discussing poor little man just wouldnt open his mouth after 1st taste. wont be doing that again. They say they are worried that he will be missing out on a food group that has lots of fat etc in it but i think ill just keep as i am. ds at least eats then. boobybob your a great help will try boob cubes 2moro. Ds1 is allergic to eggs and milk and has always been long and slim. I think his diet tends to be a bit low fat so I slosh the olive oil around when I'm cooking for him. I think as long as your ds has plenty of energy, plays and sleeps okay, and doesn't seem ill or anything you shouldn't worry. Some people are just thinner than others!

A big splash of olive oil in cooking is a quick way to increase fat intake. If he needs extra calories at this age the best way is an extra breastfeed.

Started to give an extra breast feed and will sloosh around the olive oil. Thanks guys. Hes managed to put on 300g in 2 weeks so am pleased . Hes very healthy ultra energic and sleeps 10 - 12 hours at night at the mo so cant complain. Dont know what i would do without youlot. Feeling much better. thanks
