Peanuts!

so, ds is 1 next week so i thought i would try him on some peanut butter on toast, which he loved until 10 minutes after he had finished.

his face went purple with blotches and his eyes swelled up badly, and he started itching all over.

i went into a super panic, then called nhs direct who told me to buy some piriton to give him and keep away from peanuts.

But what do i do now? this was only a couple of hours ago and the blotches are fading but does this mean he is off peanut products for life?
i also got told last week that he has a squint! so its all go this week........

I thought you were supposed to wait until 5 to introduce peanuts?

Well definitely keep him off them for a good long while... especially as it can be the second time they are exposed when they have a worse reaction.

Is that the only time he's had a reaction to something? Your best bet is to try to be referred to a consultant who will in time arrange a 'peanut challenge' in hospital where they will slowly expose him to them while monitoring.

He may well grow out of it.

Get your GP to refer to allergy specialist.

Avoid peanuts and other nuts and keep piriton with you at all times.

GoldenSnitch - i thought it was 3 but my hv said it has been revised to 1 if there are no history of allergies (we are fine with everything).

will call my gp in the morning then, so far he has never had a reaction like that but he has had eczema since he was born so maybe thats part of it.

If he has excema, he has an atopic system so is more likely to have a food allergy.

Me and DH both have hayfever and I have exzema and DH has a raw food allergy so we were always told to avoid peanuts. That said, I've only been avoiding the nuts themselves, not things which may contain them (ie everything it seems!) and we've not had a reaction yet.

I think doctors is the best bet. Hope it's good news.

keep a serious eye on him. I am surprised they didnt encourage him to be checked out, I would have been discusted. After the periton wears off the reaction could re occur, aprox 4 hrs. My dd is anaphylactic to nuts and carries epipens at all times. Watch him closely today

I had the same thing with DD. She snatched some of DS's peanut butter toast and had a reaction like you describe.

NHS direct behaved like it was nothing important but my GP referred me to the allergy specialists who jaust (today) done a skin prick test and she's allergic to raw egg as well as peanuts and hazelnuts.

Well worth a referal because then you could rule out oher dangerous things

Hi - my child has a nut allergy. It doesn't necessarily mean problems for life as about 20% outgrow peanut allergy by age 5. However those with breathing problems are less likely to outgrow problems. If they don't outgrow by 5 then it doesn't change - unless you are lucky enough to be on the Cambridge desensitisation programme.

You need specialist advice and you need to be carrying liquid piriton with you everywhere until you get it - after which they will probably tell you to carry on but may offer epipens.

Chief Medical Officer advice to gps in August 1998 was anyone suspected of nut allergy should see a specialist. Don't think that advice has ever been changed/withdrawn.
