Popcorn & fish & chips - nut allergy

Hi all

I've posted this on another site but wondered if any mners had a view....

Just a quick straw poll to see how people handle these foods! We went to the pictures yesterday (Ice Age 3 - brilliant!). Obviously ds wanted popcorn but I got a bit freaked out and couldn't work out if it was OK. I asked the manager and he said it was popped on site and cooked in coconut oil but otherwise was OK. I still couldn't decide so ended up with a bag of Skittles instead. Now, ds is not allergic to coconut (just tree nuts) - do you eat popcorn from places like this? I've seen the posts on microwaveable Butterkist (and incidentally he's had toffee Butterkist in the past with no reaction but haven't given it to him recently).

Also, just an aside - we obviously avoid indian and chinese takeaways but do you eat fish and chips? We have with not much thought but realised recently that one shop we have used in the past also serves chinese food so maybe things are fried in the same oil and therefore the risk of contamination might be higher? Would an ordinary fish and chip shop be OK?

Such a minefield!
TIA
Beggsie

Yes it is so confusing, the thing is you cannot take any risk.
Regarding breathing difficulties my DS did not have thank god, but we don't know if he was not going to have it at all (and it was just his swollen left eye with a hive and being sick) or the wonderful Piriton prevented it.. that's the thing, you never know how far an allergic reaction will go and you cannot risk it... pleased to hear both your Ds are allergic only to Brazil nut (obviously not pleased!!! I hope they could all eat every nut on Earth) I mean it is just one, so although you should remain vigilant, the risk is lower ... and they are not as popular as other nuts in desserts etc...

Hi there, new to mumsnet - first post! very interested in your stories so far, have a daughter allergic to cashew nuts and intolerances to kiwi and cheese. Re the ice cream - yes what a nightmare, found milk time ice lollies and walls soft scoop vanilla ice cream to be ok. Has anyone found a nice story book that educates a preschool child about nut allergy? found Alli the allergic elephant but no reviews. Thanks

oh sorry forgot the other point of my post - we have to be really careful with chip shops, DS seems to have allergy to groundnut oil which is used at the majority of our local chippies (luckily found out with itching around mouth rather than full on reaction with that one). Found one that uses veg oil so fine now and our local chinese said no prob as long as we tell them when we order...hope that helps :)
