OMG what on earth is in Johnson's baby bath?!

DS (2.10yrs) had really bad excema up to about 12 months but it seems to be under control now, and we know which washing powder, suncream, etc to use and not to use. He's always just had plain water in his baths with nothing added but the other week he spotted my bubble bath and asked for bubbles in his bath. To ward off a potential tantrum I let him have a little bit in his bath, and he loved the bubbles! He didn't seem to have any reaction to it so we used it for a few more days and he was fine.

So I went out and bought a Johnson's baby bath, assuming that as he'd had no reaction to my highly perfumed, not for sensitive skin bubble bath, he'd be fine with one designed for baby's sensitive skin. But after one use his whole body was completely covered in an angry red rash! Quite scary!

So we had to pursuade him not to have bubbles until it had cleared up - cue tantrums every night as he can't understand why he's not allowed bubbles any more! I've ordered an organic one from the green people so just waiting for that to arrive then hopefully he can have bubbles again!

Not entirely sure what the point of my post is! I was just shocked that something designed for babies could give him such a reaction!

oh it's horrible stuff isn't it? DS1 had terrible ezcema as a baby that he grew out of too. I bought Johnsons bubble bath as a 'treat' and practically went back to square one with his skin again.

I can't use any Johnson's product as it stings so I always avoided it with DS. He developed excema which was dairy related so I have always been careful about products for him.

Halos n' Horns is a nice range you can get in Tesco etc and we have been fine with that. Not sure if they do bubble bath - we buy the shower gel stuff.

Also Aveeno bath stuff has been ok. And DH bought a Sanex one which seems to be fine too. Problem now is that DS (now almost 8) is so used to no bubbles that he doesn't like anything in the bath so he can float with his head under the water!

They pretend its for sensitive skin but when you look at the ingredients its anything but.
Try the 'little me' organics range from boots or anything else without sodium laureth sulfate in the ingredients list.

hate J&J stuff with a passion.

lots of family ezcema, hives have been caused by this over the years.

worst thing to put on a babies skin IMO,

wish i could campaign and ban it from being recomended by midwives and hosptials/docs!

I use Infaderm bubble bath & shampoo for my dd or Infacare bubble bath. I come out in a rash with Johnsons stuff but with most own brand baby stuff I'm fine. Same with the baby wipes too. They just seem to be way too fragranced for babies. Crazy isn't it.

Halos N Horns do one don't they? It's a non-allergenic one that I use for my dd (with excema). It's not very bubbly, but you can also use it to wash them and as a shampoo too.

I wouldn't touch J & J with a bargepole - the list of ingredients is waaaay too long. I use Green People bubble bath/shower gel on DS and I use Green People stuff too.

Once you get used to non scented stuff the smells of things like J & J are just hideously overpowering.

Dermatalogical nurse who treated dd's excema when she was a baby said that Johnsons is by far the worst of the lot.

Dd bled after using it.

I'm shocked by how many people have had the same reaction to Johnson's! How can they get away with saying its extra-gentle, suitable for babies' sensitive skin, etc?? Very clever marketing. Considering DS had no reaction at all to my strong scented adult bubble bath but then had this reaction to Johnson's!

Thanks for the other recommendations - as I said we're going to try the green people one which I've ordered online, but useful to know of others that I can get from shops.

Iwouldgoouttonight - Waitrose and John lewis stock Green People stuff if you have one of those nearby?

My DD got a rash that looked like she'd been dipped in acid after bathing in Oilatum!

There was a clear line where the water came up to! She's been fine with Johnsons, and some really cheap stuff too. I guess it only takes one thing.

Dd2 had severe excema from tiny baby. We use Johnsons stuff for her older sister but have then used Oilatum/epaderm/aveeno in dd2 s bath. Nothing worked dd2 itchy as hell 24/7 and wouldn't sleep. A few months ago DH got fed up with all 'this crap' and used a flannel and Johnsons Top to Toe on her. (I looked on with a face just like that painting 'The Scream'!) Lo and behold she slept all night that night seems much better when we bath her with it and leave out all the specialised stuff. Still use Diprobase at least twice a day, Eumovate most days and restricted diet but her skin looks way different and the Johnsons Top to Toe was the only thing that we had changed. Think all children's skin is different and it's pretty much trial and error like with suncream or diet.

Do not use Johnson Baby products if your baby has eczema. My son is now 13 months and he has eczema but is under control. I use Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Cream and Aveeno Baby Bath Treatment Sachets. They only sell Aveeno Baby line in the US so I order them online. I have tried all sorts of creams and trust me the shipping cost is worth it

one thing that does amaze me about J & J is the 'no more tears' factor. How do they do that?

My ds was like a babboon when we used j & j wipes.

In a way I'm grateful cos we all use Jason products now because of it. I would never of known/guessed otherwise. No SLS or parabens in this house
