Hi

My LO is 1 this month but since 6 months ish has had a reaction to dairy.

We are seeing a dietician and she is on Pepti powder milk and we avoid all dairy now, the dietician has advised i try her once a month with some cheese to see if we still get a reaction.

Has anyone else had to do this ?

What cheese did you use ? so far i have tried chedder in a sauce which caused a bad reaction then i have also tried some gouda which produced a slightly milder reaction.

Are some cheeses milder than others if so which ones are best ?

Sorry for all the questions

Cazz

Cazz, not exactly an answer to your question but have you seen an allergist? Trying cheese once a month doesn't sound like a very good idea to me - it takes longer than a month to grow out of an allergy and repeated exposures and reactions may well make the allergy worse. I think you should ask to speak to a pediatric allergy specialist about when/how to reintroduce dairy and would personally give it another 12 months before trying again.

but, to answer your question, ds1 had a dairy allergy and grew out of it at age 3. When we started reintroducing milk (from 2.5) we did it in this order (recommended by our allergy clinic):

  1. Milk cooked into something like biscuits/cake
  2. Margarine (not butter)
  3. Hard cheese
  4. Soft cheese
  5. Yogurt
  6. Milk

Hope this helps - I'm sure she will grow out of it, it might just take a year or 2.

Thanks

Yes by referral from a GP. If you are lucky there will be an allergy clinic near you, if not a pediatrician with a specialism in allergies may be your best bet

Our allergy clinic gave ds1 an annual blood and skin prick test (blood test is RAST test and only needs a few drops from the thumb so not very traumatic). When the results showed he was beginning to lose the allergy they did a challenge at the hospital. He failed the first at 18 mo and passed just before his third birthday.
