neocate v nutramigen aa

DS (15 months) had a reaction to Nutramigen, so was put on Neocate Advance. It comes in packets, and makes up 400 mls per packet. DS has 600 mls a day, and the Dietician said to make up 800 mls and chuck out the 200mls for hygiene reasons.

She also said DS is on hypoallergenic formula indefinitely, so am considering that this is quite a wasteful method.

He didn't seem to mind the taste of Nutramigen, so am wondering whether a tin of AA would be better?

Any experiences?

That's just silly. I shake out a bit of powder from the sachet to make up the correct amount (largely guesswork!) and keep the rest of the sachet for the next day. Don't throw it away it's so expensive.

My ds2 didn't get on with Nutramigen AA (it was purely a taste thing), as it tastes a lot like standard Nutramigen. I have a spare unopened tin if you'd like to give it a go, I can send it to you.

I am trying to get my daughter on Neocate Active which comes in 300ml packets. Instead of making up the whole packet I use the old Neocate scope which I think holds 5 g. Each 5 g needs to be mixed with 20mls of water. This way I can make up her milk as I go along. May be an idea as it stops any waste. It should tell you on the sachet how much powder is in it then you can do the maths . Hope this helps.

Do you get your milk prescibed ilove? i know it's still wasteful even if you do.

We have tried the Nutamigen dd2 is prescribed - she was not amused!

Thanks Monkey! Great idea. DS gets Neocate Advance on prescription, and as you know, it comes in sachets. I haven't ever had a scoop. The instructions do not mention ratios, but rather 340 mls makes 400 mls, so am grateful for the 5:20 ratio. I will use this

I am concerned about the waste, as although I am not paying (directly) it does cost the NHS, and on this basis am concerned. And I generally despise waste!

ilovemydog, just a thought but if your ds is on a reasonably varied diet then you could ask to be put onto Neocate Active. This is not nutritionally complete like Advance is, but contains more calcium and 1 packet makes up 300 mls so you'd just need 2 packets of that per day for your 600 ml use.

My DD (16mths) is on neocate but cutting down seriously on the amount she will drink ie now 10/12ozs a day.

Its not down to taste as she previusly drank over 20.

She just wants to eat!!

Was prescribed calcium supplement which she has been taking for a wk but then realised it had lactose in it She was reacting to something, just couldn't work it out iyswim.

If neocate active has more calcium in, should I move her to that??

Simpson, possibly. That is more like a follow-on formula i.e. not nutritionally complete but to be used as a supplement for children with allergies. It has more calories per 100ml and more calcium than standard neocate (300 mls provides 300mg which is their full RDA of calcium iirc).

Advance has the same number of calories as Active but is nutritonally complete and is useful when the child has so many allergies he/she can't eat a balanced diet. It has less calcium in though (I guess because they assume they will drink more of it).

On the other hand though, does your dd get calcuim from other sources as well as her neocate (green leafy veg, sardines, calcium-fortified soya yoghurt etc etc)?

Could be worth discussing with your GP or dietician (if you are under one).

TBH I don't think she does get enough calcium.

She is also intolerant to soya so that is out although she does love broccoli,veg,fruit,all meat etc.
