Could this be milk intolerance?

My son is 6 months old and has always suffered from what I presumed was colic but now as he is getting older and things are not improving I am becoming concerned. So I took him to the GPs and explained his symtoms. Back arching during feeds, screaming as if in pain regularly throughout the day ( during these screaming episodes he shoves his hand in his mouth and seems to have smelly breath), very windy (from both ends, despite being winded at feed times)that do not improve with infacol, explosive loose poos that always leak from the nappy and just generally unsettled. The GP decided it was reflux and prescribed ranitidine and asked for a stool sample (not sure what they are looking for, should of asked I know) Since he has had the medicine the screaming has reduced especially at night and he seems to be sleeping better but he stills suffers with the wind and still is quite unsettled.

Any thoughts?

The symptoms do sound like a milk intolerance or allergy.

You could ask your GP if you could try your DS on a hypoallergenic formula to see if that improves things and ask for a referral for allergy testing.

well he sounds exactly like my son, and he had a milk intolerance

simpson · 29/04/2009 23:36

What FF is he on out of interest?

My DD is dairy/soya intolerant but seemed to be slightly better on cow & gate than any other brands...

BTW the symptoms you describe sound like it could be an intolerance....

I would definately go to your doctor and ask for a referral.

Have you done the stool sample?

My DD was diagnosed with intolerance through stool sample (showed sugar in stool)might be what they are looking for...

He is on Cow & Gate.

I have done the stool sample and will phone for the results today, I am also going to the HV clinic today and I will mention milk intolerance.

The GP said at my last visit if things didn't improve in a month she would do a referral, I think I will ask if she can do it sooner.

Thanks for all your replys

It can take so long to get a referral that you might be worth asking her to do it now anyway.

Good luck with the results, although I'm not sure what the preferred outcome is!!!!!

simpson · 30/04/2009 10:46

Yes I would also ask for a referral straight away...

We waited for at least 2mths so worth getting GP to do it now...

Good luck with stool sample...

Well I went to the HV's clinic today and when it came to my turn the HV started to talk to me about weaning as my son is 6 months today so I decided to tell her about my visit to the GPs and that I will be starting weaning at a slow pace so I don't upset his tummy and her reply was 'are you sure he is the one with the problem?' implying that I worrying about nothing and I didn't even mention milk intolerance. Why can't she take me seriously like my GP has?

The HVs always make me feel uneasy and make me question my maternal instincts.

One thing I am sure of he is very different to my other children (I have 4) and the reflux medicine has made such a difference but he still seems unsettled albeit less than before the medicine and is very windy.

With regards to the stool sample results my preferred outcome would be for him to not have a milk intolerance which would mean the problem is reflux and that he is a winndy boy which I would hope improves as his digestive system matures. I phoned 3 times for the results today but they still on the GPs computer, so I try again tomorrow.

I ment NOT on the computer

How did you get on with results today?

mrzmoo2009 · 01/05/2009 22:52

hi my daughter was exactly the same as you have described and the doctors have said that she is intolerant to the protein in cows milks so she now on neocate but thats not much better although she has improved in herself she's alot more pleasant and happy but now suffers from chronic constipation coz of the new milk shes been like this for nearly 3 months bt they wont change her milk again

mummymimi · 02/05/2009 09:26

The results came back as normal which I am really pleased about. This suggests to me that the problem is actually the silent reflux, we didn't have any screaming episodes yesterday and this morning has been good so far. He still seems to have alot of wind from both ends. I think things are starting to settle down, he has been on the medicine for 10 days now and I have noticed a big improvement, I am not pacing the floor with a screaming baby and he will actually play in his play nest for a few minutes at a time.

Thanks for all your replys
