Reaction to Calpol but not Tesco own brand Paracetamol - has anyone seen anything similar?

DS2 is teething (5 1/2 months) we have been giving him the odd dose of Tesco Paracetamol, he doesn't like it very much but has not reacted in anyway to it.

We have now run out of Tesco own brand and have given him Calpol, my DH gave him one dose this morning and we have just given him a second one this afternoon. DS2 started spluttering (mix between a cough and a sneeze), eyes started running and became puffy and he has red blotches on this forehead. His breathing was OK and he seems fine now. DH just though a bit had gone down the wrong way this morning, but as it has happened twice I think it may be more than this.

I was just wondering if anyone has seen anyting like this in their own DCs? I will be going to the Drs on Monday with him.

My older son had egg allergy, hay fever so we have a bit of an allergic family.

It could be a colouring/flavouring. Have you compared the ingredients?

Calpol is very pink.

scrooged · 22/03/2009 14:51

It sounds like a reaction to all the shite colourings/flavourings. Alot of children have the same problem.

calpol has ingredients which are banned in many European countries - as scrooged said.

we have just got some more Tesco own brand so I have a leaflet now, I will compare the ingredients.

DD has always made herself sick after calpol! She is now 6 and will tolerate the tesco version.
She also suffers from hayfever & pet allergies.
I never made the connection before so I'll follow this thread with interest

My dd can't have Calpol (or any other medicine which is coloured), it brings her out in a rash. We eventually managed to work out it was the colouring causing the reaction. She has Lloyds own Paracetamol which is colour and sugar free, or Neurofen.

DS was sick with Calpol but is fine with Tescos own paracetamol too. You'd think it shouldn't be allowed to have something in which clearly upsets many LOs.
