Isn't it classed as an 'uncommon tree nut'? So yes

See here. Scroll down.

My ds has nut allergies but only to peanut and hazelnut. Has your ds not been tested to see what he is allergic to?

debliz5 · 05/03/2009 18:42

My ds was tested only to peanuts. But I know he's allergic also to pistaccio (tried giving him a sandwich with pistaccio spread...). I'm afraid to try, of course - but so many things are with coconut now...

Ds1 is allergic to peanuts. We (obviously) avoid peanuts with him and have been advised to avoid all tree nuts (hazelnut, cashew etc)with him until he is 5 even though he has tested negative for allergies to these. However we were told by the allergy clinic that coconut does not count as a tree nut for allergy purposes and that ds was no more likely to be allergic to it than any other person. I'm pretty sure this is the case as coconut does not have to be specifically highlighted on the back of packaging in the 'May contains' box like other nuts do.

Anyway, we give him coconut.

according to my book, coconut and nutmeg, are the only two things with "nut" in their name that are safe to eat.

Thanks for your replies. So now I feel less worried and shall try it on him carefully next time I encounter something with coconut in it. Thanks again.
