Chocolate causing my nephew tummy pain?

This is really weird but it looks like chocolate is giving my nephew tummy ache and also diarrhoea.

It isn't milk causing it as he drinks milk and has it on his cereal with no ill effects.

Is there anything else in chocolate that can ccause problems for people?

Thank you.

Sarah

What age is he?

wangle99 · 21/02/2009 08:28

He was three last September. I have had a quick google and found that chocolate can be the cause of intolerance but it didn't really say why.

My gran eats chocolate as a laxative - not laxative choc just normal.

Maybe switch to white chocolate?

As a child I was allergic to chocolate. The substance Tyramine triggered abdominal migraines which are mostly seen in children (rather than adults). My symptoms were tummy cramp and vomiting. Although I am likely to have grown out of it now, I don't fancy trying it again and avoid red wine for the same reason.

I should also mention that if he does need to avoid chocolate carob is a good alternative that is tyramine free, you can get carob bars from health food specialists and supermarkets like Waitrose.
