Reaction to ketchup?

AnneOfAvonlea · 16/01/2009 20:05

DD2 is 2. She has recently discovered ketchup and loves it. However fairly quickly after eating it she gets some rashy type spots and some redness on the skin.

I've not heard of an allergy to ketchup before? I guess it is likely to be a certain ingredient? She's had tomatoes in pasta sauce and been ok. What could this be? And should I do anything about it?

Thanks

could it be either vinegar or salt?

4andnotout · 16/01/2009 20:07

My dd's get this and it is very common it is the acid in the vinegar and tomatoes.

noonki · 16/01/2009 20:12

could it be a citric acid allergy?

smoggie · 16/01/2009 20:12

could be celery depending on the make of ketchup - ds1 was allergic to celery and it's in Heinz ketchup but not "Daddies".

Lots of children get rashes after eating sauces, mine does but it must be from a preservative. It tends to be more from cheaper brands and sachets in cafes rather than well known makes. Like someone else said I wouldn't worry, its likely to be sensitive skin and my dd1 (3yrs) has now stopped getting it. HTH

Wow, quite a few responses. And it seems it could be a few different things?

both my dc get this but only with particular ketchups.

Stopped since they stopped missing their mouths

Did you know there is milk in ketchup? Hard to believe, but there is. Check the label.

dizzydixies · 16/01/2009 20:35

happens only with the cheapy packet ketchup you get at cafes etc

stick to heinz!!

AnneOfAvonlea · 16/01/2009 20:39

It does seem more pronounced with 'cafe ketchup' than with the Heinz we have at home.

stick to heinz and only if and when required - my friend's wee girl has the same problem but loves ketchup
(STILL loving your name!! shall have to drag out the box sets soon!)

dizzydixies. Thankyou

Thing is, she seems to love ketchup. She is only 2 and discovered it about a month ago. I told her we would have tea at a cafe and asked her what she would like (expecting sausages, nuggets as an answer). She said 'ketchup, lots'

yes, sometimes I ask my DD1 if she wants some dinner with her ketchup

ravenAK · 16/01/2009 20:49

I also have dc who react to 'packet' ketchup or catering ketchup but not bottled stuff. I've wondered if there's something in it to stop it congealing?

Ds has about grown out of the reaction at 4.6.
