My DD is 11mths and severely intolerant to all dairy products and soy too

Does anyone know of any bread you can buy that doesn't have soy flour in it as all the ones I've looked at seem to have it in.

TIA

Simpson, ds1 had an allergy to strawberries and also tomatoes until he was about 3 and then it suddenly stopped.

trixymalixy · 09/01/2009 09:44

I know, DS loved soya yoghurts when he could have them . It would be so much easier just to be able to give him a yoghurt.

The rice & rice desserts are the closest thing I've found to yoghurt.

Apparently you can make yoghurt from rice milk, but the only dairy free cultures I could find were soya based.

Bilbomum · 09/01/2009 09:58

Haven't had time to read all the posts but Marks & Spencer do two white sliced loaves that are soya free (and v tasty). Think one's called Crusty Farmhouse and they also do finger rolls both white and brown that are soya free. I also keep promising to make my own but never find the time. I buy the M&S rolls & loaves in bulk and stick them in the freezer as they sometimes sell out.

There was a recipe for pancakes someone posted on here over Christmas which I tried on my son last night and they were fab. If you can find the thread they're worth a try.

I have every sympathy on the 'reading the label' nightmare, my son is severely allergic to dairy, egg, nuts, sesame, soya and peas and it's just a nightmare. I'm just weaning his sister and have my fingers crossed we won't have the same problems with her.

simpson · 09/01/2009 11:37

Looks like I am going to M & S then today

TBH I am suprised that companies like neocate don't make and sell puddings too that people could buy on line etc.

Oh wow, thanks Bilbomum!!!

i think I'll be heading to M&S as well!!

simpson · 09/01/2009 15:40

Woo hoo

Have got bread from M&S

Got a small loaf which was only 85p!!

Also picked up some custard powder. I thought custard had egg in it

Got oat milk too

When I make up the custard do I have to put any sugar in it or is the oat milk sweet enough on its own?

OP posts:
Bilbomum · 09/01/2009 16:00

Well done Simpson, custard and toast for tea then

I have also only just discovered that ready made puff pastry from M&S doesn't have dairy/soya in either. My ds (age 2) loves cutting out shapes and painting jam on them and then I bake them for him. Not v healthy but it all helps to get calories into the little blighters....

simpson · 09/01/2009 20:43

Thanks for tip on puff pastry - think she might like that and DS(3) can "help"

The rice milk went down well!! I just gave it to her with a mashed up rusk.

Didn't want to give her the custard too in case she reacted then I wouldn't know which one caused it iyswim.

We are going to try her some toast in the morning with pure spread

Most puff pastry in the supermarket doesn't have dairy or soya in it. That's a fab idea about getitng Dc to help cut out and put jam on them. Will need to try that!

You will need sugar in the custard with the oat milk.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I've been feeling under the weather. Anway, I hsave looked high and low for that cake recipe and I cannot find the book it came from I suspect I leant it to someone... BUT I have found a book which I am very happy to lend to you. It has lots of receipes in which I used for my DS2.

The book is Easy wheat, egg and milk-free cooking and it is by Rita Greer. It doenst explicitly say soya free but I was there are many recipes without soya flour for instance in it. I am very happy to post it you for as long as you'd like to borrow it. DO you have CAT facility?

Naswm - thanks for coming back to me. Hope you feel better

Have given DD toast twice and she has had 2 very runny poos which I don't know if it has been caused by the bread or just a normal ruuny poo iyswim (sorry TMI)

Got next hospital appt on 12th Feb so think I am going to have to insist on tests etc to see if she has other allergies/intolerances etc.

Thanks very much for offer of book...may see if local library has it first to save you posting it or see how much it is in book shop as I am sure to need my own copy

OP posts:
naswm · 11/01/2009 19:52

oh no, so sorry about the runny poo.... silly question, but are you sure it is not the cereal she could be intolerant to?

I totally empathise with your struggles with this. Is the hosp any good? London?

simpson · 11/01/2009 20:14

Do you mean her breakfast cereal?

I think she is ok with it...she has been having it for a while.

It's a baby porridge and I just mix it with her neocate.

However she does get runny poos from eating too much fruit so it could be that...but I don't think so TBH.

Yes am in London. Got appt with dietician on 12th Feb.

OP posts:
naswm · 11/01/2009 20:18

I meant wheat or gluten

I am london too - I am SE...

simpson · 11/01/2009 20:20

Oh silly me

That is my fear TBH that its the wheat/gluten

Would make feeding her very difficult.

Good news is that I tried her with oat milk today which she loved

Am in West London...got appt at Hillingdon hospital.

OP posts:
naswm · 11/01/2009 20:23

if not happy with hillingdon, ask for referral to GOSH - excellent dieticians there - as is trhe rest of that place

I am not far away if I can help.

simpson · 11/01/2009 20:27

Thanks naswm!!

Haven't seen dietician yet so don't know what they are like but pead and consultant total pants and just thought she had constipation Grrr.

Have just realised however that DD has eaten baked beans loads of times with no problems. Don't they have wheat or gluten in?

OP posts:
naswm · 11/01/2009 20:28

baked beans - now that is a big issue IIRC!!! Depends on the brand - but my ds was ok with Heinz

simpson · 11/01/2009 20:43

It was branston beans and she had fish finger with it too. It's her favourite meal

OP posts:
naswm · 11/01/2009 20:44

oh yes DS used to eat a lot of ff!!

and beans for that matter!!

simpson · 11/01/2009 22:48

Have just had a thought...maybe its the sunflower oil?

Stupid me tried DD (was over keen ) on 3 new things in 2 days.

First one was pure sunflower spread

second was the bread

then the third was oat milk

Am sooo pants at this allergy stuff, I guess I need to wait in between each new thing

OP posts:
rubytwokids · 11/01/2009 23:28

Ack - I forgot about the cashews in Booja Booja! So sorry!!!!

It's a nightmare, isn't it Simpson? I'm off to the dietician tomorrow, so will share any good tips she offers.

simpson · 12/01/2009 20:59

ruby2kids - how did dietitian go?

OP posts:
rubytwokids · 12/01/2009 23:40

Hi simpson! It was good. Apparently ds is slightly low on iron, calcium and something else I have forgotten about, but which will hopefully be on the dietitian's letter! She assured me these were common complications of following a limited diet. Apart from that though, he's doing OK. She suggested some supplements for him.

I thought of you though, because she said she has heard, but not yet been able to confirm, that Tesco's Finest Olive Oil spread margarine is dairy-free and soya-free. Don't take my word for it, but do check it out next time you are there. I hope she's right, because it would be good to have a back-up, for those annoying times when there appears to be a global shortage of Pure Sunflower margarine!!!

BTW, what make is your breadmaker? Was making my usual fool-proof loaf today and thought of you again. The pull of mumsnet, eh? If yours is a Morphy Richards fastbake, would you like my adapted milk-free and soya-free recipe? If you can count to 4, you can do it, honest.

simpson · 12/01/2009 23:46

LOL It's a morphy Richards one.

Doesn't say anything else on it so don't know type etc But would *love recipe!!

Glad you got on well at dietitians

How do they know what your DS lacks? Blood tests etc...

DD has had 2 very runny poos today am wondering if its the oat milk as she has had no bread or pure spread since yesterday morning... but had oat milk in her breakfast cereal today.

However could be normal slightly upset tummy ifswim and I am being paranoid....
