10mth old screaming & straining ALL day....what to do???

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 05/12/2008 20:48

Hi

My 10mth old DD has been diagnosed with a milk intolerance and she has been prescribed wysoy which she has been on for a couple of weeks.

At first she seemed ok, then a few days ago I gave her a soya yogurt which set her off screaming/straining etc and ever since then seems unable to tolerate her soya milk.

We referred to the hospital a few mths ago prescribed soya milk in the first place and the earliest I can get another appt is Jan

I have a GP appt on Wed for her, again the earliest I could get

What do I do in the meantime? DD was so bad this evening I had to help her poo with tissues etc (sorry TMI)Once she has pooed she is quite happy.

Do I continue with soya milk (screaming will do my head in and she must be in pain) till I see someone

Or do I put her back on "normal" FF which she was intolerant to but nowhere near as bad as this

Or has anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks so much, just hate seeing DD in pain

Bumping for you Simpson poor dd

kalo12 · 05/12/2008 21:27

bump

tatt · 05/12/2008 22:29

What were her symptoms on milk - are you near a large shopping centre where you may be able to get either probiotic powder or lactose drops? If you are you could try those or phone the gp and ask if you could have a prescription for Pepti Junior - don't wait to see them.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 05/12/2008 22:35

Tatt - thanks for replying

What is pepti jr? [ignorant emoticon]

When she was on ff she was constipated too but not as bad as this She has 3 skin tags on her bum that are getting worse with the straining.

When we first went to the hospital she was prescribed lactulose for constipation but once tests came back that she had sugar in stools I was told to stop giving it to her.the lactulose did absolutely NOTHING TBH.

The FF she was on cow & gate has proboitic in it which is why she was ok(ish)

She has never really fed well with milk but when she was weaned this is when all her symptoms started

Pepti Junior is one of the milks that are adjusted to make them less allergenic. The others are neocate and nutramigen. You may be able to get Pepti Junior otc, I'm not sure. It is what my friend's milk and soy intolerant baby was given because he wouldn't take Neocate.

tatt · 06/12/2008 09:56

did a quick google - costs 13 pounds over the counter which I guess is why my friend had it on prescription. I think aptamil also has probiotics in it and gripe water has some lactase. I meant lactase drops not lactose. You can buy those on the net but I'm not sure you'd find them on the high street.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 06/12/2008 10:18

Tatt - Cheers will get some gripe water today. Am buying FF today and will either get cow & gate or Aptamil (she has been on both and seem okish)

Your poor little dd, and poor you for having to see her in such pain and distress. Presumably it was your GP who prescribed Wysoy for the milk intolerance? The problem with this is that if your dd is allergic to cow's milk there is about a 60% chance she will also have problems with soy. Nutramigen (and Pepti-Junior) are both 'extensively hydrolysed' formulas which are the first line treatment for milk allergy. Your GP can prescribe these without a referral to a paediatrician. It is more expensive than Wysoy, so your GP may be reluctant to prescribe it, however you could request a two week trial which should be enough to see any improvements (you may see improvements within a few days). Really emphasise how much pain your dd is in. In the meantime, if your dd is better on normal formula, put her back on it! Hope that helps (I'm a paediatric dietitian).

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 07/12/2008 21:16

sarsums i think Simpson would be really interested to talk to you (am from her post/ante natal thread) she has been suffering with this for a while now and with very little help for her dd.
Have pointed her in this direction but don't think she online today would be great if you could check back to this thread!

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 07/12/2008 21:36

Sarsums - Thanks for that!!

Today is day two of being back on cow & gate and we now have the opposite problem ie runny poo very sore bum

However it might be caused by the amount of fruit she has eaten today!! But NO screaming/straining!!

It was the pead who prescribed wysoy not GP. TBH the pead annoyed me as he kept going on about her skin tags on bum and dry skin on belly. When I said I thought she had a dairy intolerance (especially bad after yogurt)he kind of dismissed me and it was only when I insisted on her stools being tested that we found out there was sugar in them

Lily loo - Cheers for pointing me here

something like 30% of children who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy.

I would talk to gp about trying neocate.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 08/12/2008 00:23

Noiamnot - Cheers will mention neocate to GP. My only concern with neocate is I have read from other threads that their Los didn't like the taste.

Also when cooking do I use neocate (or whichever formula given) or what?

Is there anything I can buy like margarine for her to have on toast? I bought pure which is soy based and obviously a no no.

OP posts:
noiamnot · 08/12/2008 00:48

I have only found one margarine here in Ireland that has no soy in it. No, I lie, there is another by Biona but ds1 can't have that one. The one he has, I can't remember off top of my head. Will look and post soon.

When cooking I use olive oil or rice milk or their margarine.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 08/12/2008 11:35

noiamnot - Cheers for that. Will look into rice milk.

I use olive oil but want something to make things like mash taste nicer iyswim.

OP posts:
noiamnot · 08/12/2008 12:12

well we use margarine to make mash. Don't usually add rice milk. Margarine and salt and pepper. They are used to it.

sarsums · 08/12/2008 13:07

Neocate is also a very good option. It has no cow's milk protein so is the 'gold standard' for allergy treatment, while Nutramigen is the next best thing and cheaper to prescribe.

Compared to normal formula and breast milk, neither taste or smell very nice, but you can wean your dd on to these by mixing with normal formula first. Some find that adding some flavouring eg. vanilla essence can help. Neocate and Nutramigen can be used in cooking.

If you found your paediatrician unsympathetic, would your GP be more understanding? Tell your GP that you didn't find the paed very helpful regarding your milk allergy concerns. If you have no luck with the GP prescribing Nutram/Neocate, then drop me an email; [email protected]

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 08/12/2008 14:45

Sarsums - thank you so much!! Our GP is brilliant TBH so was planning on telling her about hosp and asking for prescription for a new milk. Will email you if i have no luck on Wed.

noiamnot - The margarines that I have seen all have buttermilk in them. Is there one without do you know?

OP posts:
sarsums · 08/12/2008 18:37

No problem.... I know that it can be hard to be taken seriously with symptoms that many just put down to a cranky baby or colic.
When my dd was very little she had terrible reflux (had all the classic symptoms and blood in her puke) which my GP tried to tell me was colic.

With cow's milk allergy, I believe that so many little ones go undiagnosed and are left in a lot of pain and discomfort until they grow out of it (usually by about 2 years old). Allergies are often a difficult and grey area, however I think it's unacceptable that so many are denied very straight forward treatment with the special formulas.

Hope all goes well with your GP on Wednesday!!

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 08/12/2008 20:41

Sarsums - so sorry to hear about your DD. My neighbours Lo has only just been diagnosed with reflux at 14 mths despite repeated trips to docs, her ALWAYS crying, sick etc.

My DD has always been demanding TBH and I put it down to her personality but now think she has probably been in a lot of pain which is why she has cried to much

Pure do a margarine that is sunflower oil based, rather than soy. we use that

thefortbuilder · 08/12/2008 20:51

only just happened upon this thread and hope that all goes ok with your GP this week.

ds2 was on neocate when in SCBU as top ups as it was the best thing tolerated by prems. i think there is something about the taste though

the people who make infacol started making some probiotic drops or i think there are others you can get from the pharmacy at not too much of a cost if you wanted to do that

fingers crossed it goes well with GP though

tatt · 08/12/2008 21:06

I think Stork may be dairy free if a hard margarine is acceptable? Sorry can't remember what other brands we had when we were dairy free.

BalloonSlayer · 08/12/2008 21:26

The Pure spread in the yellow tub is both dairy and soya free.

DS1 was (is) allergic to dairy and was allergic to soya. So when we had DD we had to assume she was the same and had to restrict her diet. We had horrendous problems with constipation, or rather she did, poor darling. Much as you describe.

She was prescribed lactulose and due to the milk allergy aspect I was very worried. It made little difference to her, which I attributed to milk problems. But I was later told that the strategy with lactulose should be to increase the dose until basically you have diarrhoea, then you reduce the dose till you have the result you want. If your Dr does not know to do that, this might be why you have that effect (I am saying all this as it turned out that DD did NOT have a diary allergy, and she had much the same problems as your DD). Anyway, I lost confidence with lactulose and went on to Senna, which tastes vile but can be mixed with a strong-tasting pudding, is dairy fee and did the trick.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 09/12/2008 12:26

Thanks so much for responses!!!

BalloonSlayer - Going to get Pure spread today

Flick - It is probably worth me have probiotic drops in house will see if I can get them over counter.

She has been much better back on cow & gate but poo is now VERY runny and her bum is sore....but at least its only till tomorrow.

OP posts:
thefortbuilder · 09/12/2008 12:42
