Hi All

DD had her nut challenge today as part of her clinical study. Short recap for any new readers, DD is (was?) anaphylactic to peanuts (RAST over 150), she started the STOP study in February which aims to desensitize sufferers to allergens, in this case peanuts.

After 7 long months DD ate peanut butter on toast today under hospital conditions and she is FINE! It was the equivalent of 5 peanuts. She had a slight tummy ache and was a little sick but no anaphylactic reaction at all.

6 months now on peanut butter every day then she has her next set of tests to see how her RAST has been affected.

Never thought I would see the day (BBF sobbing quietly)....

Wonderful!!! It gives such hope that anaphylatic shock could become a thing of the past.

I know I react less to cats since we had our own for 6 years.

Excellent news!!!

Hope her tummy adapts soon but that is such wonderful news for you both- I may shed a little tear myself.

Please, please keep on with the updates.

How amazing!

Hope your dd likes peanut butter?

neolara · 02/10/2008 13:07

Sounds fantastic. What's the STOP study? My nephew has just been diagnoses as allergic to peanuts.

BlueBumedFly · 02/10/2008 13:10

Desperate - I know eh? I am sure she will get sick of it in time!! At the moment she is just hugging the jar!

Neolara - STOP Study is taking place at the Addenbrooke's Hospital under Dr Andrew Clark, it is amazing. They start them off with a nasal spray and work on up!

Thanks BBF. I've just googled and found one of your other threads about STOP. Sounds great.

I may contact my SIL about it.

I've been reading so many stories lately from people who can't eat hospital food, are threatened with losing their jobs and other things - it's so good to read something that gives hope.

TooTicky · 02/10/2008 22:34

Amazing stuff!

Well done you and dd!

BlueBumedFly · 02/10/2008 23:38

Tatt - Addenbrookes is an amazing hospital, the staff are so caring and the treatment plans are so well structured. We are big fans as you can imagine!

Neolara - get in touch, they are really great people up there.

TooT- thanks hun, we are made up, now onto the hard slog of the next 6 months!

Tha bad news? After 9 years of not being able to eat nuts, peanuts, traces of nut etc. DD tried peanut butter today and hated it! What do they say about the body knowing what is best....?
