Hi All

We've been in hospital all weekend with our 4 month old as she's been pooping blood since Saturday. This started out of nowhere as she was doing 1 movement a day with no issues, then suddenly its non stop with blood.

They took bloods which came back normal so are putting this down to a cows milk intolerance. We've been given a tub of SMA Althera to try which she has been taking since Sunday, however this morning her poo has changed from the normal yellow to a dark brown/possibly green shade. Is this normal for this formula? She was on aptamil before.

It's meant to stop her bleeding but looks like there is some watery blood soaked into the nappy still. She's also got mucus blood in there too.

Not sure if related but she had a rash appear on her cheek the day before this started, tiny bumps and red so it looked like blusher, but it's already fading.

I'm still feeling shaken up by how much she's been bleeding this weekend and what else could be wrong, any advice if you've been through this would be great x

The formula given is still cows milk based but the proteins have been partially broken down. You might need a completely dairy free formula such as neocate or alfamino

Or it might be that the gut is still inflamed and sore from the previous dairy milk and it's taking a bit of time to heal. It can take 3-6 weeks to fully heal but you should seen signs of improvement earlier than this
