CMPA or reflux

Evening all, need some advice please!

Our 6 week old has been suffering from silent reflux, since she was a week or so old. Took her to the doctors a couple of weeks ago and they advised us to start using carobel (she has always been formula fed, aptamil).

This seemed to be working well for her reflux, however last week we noticed that she was starting to get a bit of a rash on her face, chest and behind the ears, and runny poos which I think have mucous in (please can someone confirm? Will post some pics below). So we stopped using the carobel on Saturday.

Went to the GP this morning thinking they were just going to prescribe us gaviscon instead, but they have said they think it may be a slight intolerance to cows milk protein and prescribed us aptamil pepti 1.

Baby has not seemed to take to this at all today so far as it is so thin, seems to be making her reflux worse! She is actually being a bit sick which she wasn’t ever really before. She’s not a fussy baby at all apart from during feeds, so I was a bit surprised the be going straight down the intolerance route from the docs! But they have put the rash and diarrhea down to this rather than the carobel.

Whilst I know these symptoms are symptoms of CMPA, is it possible that this was just a reaction to the carobel and not the milk? She never had any problems (other than the silent reflux) before the carobel so I’m just really confused and after a bit of advice!

I don’t want to give her this aptamil pepti 1 if she isn’t liking it and making the reflux worse if she doesn’t actually need it, but also don’t want to dismiss it possibly being an intolerance.

Any advice welcome for an anxious FTM - thanks in advance 😊

My baby had reflux and the carobel was great, then he got a rash and stuff and gave us the pepti 1.
Id try the pepti 1 with carobel, that's what we had to do. Its like water without

thanks @JollyRoseBiscuit. Did they prescribe the pepti for suspected CMPA? Did it work?

They did yes, took about 2 weeks for any difference but worked lovely. We started the milk ladder but all symtoms reappeared straight away so now on pepti 1 till he is 1

@JollyRoseBiscuitmaybe it is an intolerance then and I’m just hoping it’s not 😢

hope your son has better luck at 1!

We're 15 weeks deep on pepti 1 and honestly if that is also your problem, you'll be absolutely fine when your child is sorted 💖 good luck

Any update on this? Having the exact same thing! My first born was on pepti 1 so thinking this will be the same although first born had more severe symptoms where as this baby barely cries

rosecbrm · 23/09/2025 17:56

@mummabearlolapologies I missed this! It was never CMPA for my now 5 month old. We think the diarrhoea was a reaction to the carobel cause it stopped. The rash was also just a heat rash!

The doctor prescribed us the gaviscon and it worked a dream, she only needed it for a few weeks. She is on normal Aptamil and has no issues at all. Hope this helps! X
