Rash from Heinz ketchup?

My son is 4 and he used to get a slight red rash round his mouth after having Heinz ketchup. We switched to another brand when Heinz prices flew up, but recently bought a bottle and since he’s been having it again the rash has appeared. It’s red all round his mouth, but no other signs or symptoms. Other ketchup’s seem to be fine!

Obviously I’m going to move back to other brands, but what can I put on the rash to clear it up in the meantime please? Unsure what to use! It used to clear up after a few hours, but it’s staying where it is now!

Do you have any antihistamines you can give him?

KoalaPineapple · 08/06/2025 18:40

Antihistamines (children’s piriton from chemist), give him a bath and a good wash to get all residue off, just time will allow the body to stop reacting. 🙂

My dd used to get this - I think it was the vinegar.

She outgrew the allergy but avoided ketchup for a few years.

Thanks all! He had a bath before bed and I gave him so piriton so hopefully that’ll help. He’s been ok for ages just seems to be heinz that irritates it

Children's antihistamine.
Dd used to get this from ketchup at this age, used to make her cheek red and make her hot. She's 18 and still eating ketchup and still getting a reaction.

Heinz uses a lot of actual tomatoes in its sauce.. could he have a tomato intolerance?

tsmainsqueeze · 09/06/2025 18:41

I don't have a solution but just to say my daughter got this with every ketchup bar Heinz , it always faded by itself and she outgrew it .
That was in the days when you didn't need a loan to buy it !

Hey @foreverchangingnappies

My dd has similar issues, I suspect it is because heinz has a higher level of tomato than most supermarket brands. Dd is hyper sensitive to citric acid so the more actual tomatoes in the ketchup the worse she is.

As others have said, antihistamine (ceterizine is usually the one they prescribe for kids) and give his face a good wash and it should calm down.

I find the low sugar and salt ones to be the best with dd.
