CMPA symptoms gone.... then reappeared?

Hi all,

My bow 2 year old was diagnosed with cmpa at 3 weeks old. We gave her nutramigen formula and she later successfully completed the milk ladder.

She seemed symptom free for the longest time so we're a bit stumped here.

For the past 2 weeks after her bottle of milk at bedtime, she has developed a cough which only happens about an 2 hours or so after her milk and she will then vomit. After she vomits she is 100% and goes back to sleep. This is how she was when she first got diagnosed.

At first we though nasal drip, or a cold or even reflux but we have tried all the usual remedies that give her relief from these things and nothing has worked.

My friend is a midwife and she said it sounds like cmpa but I'm just wondering can that happen? Like can she be symptoms free for so long and then suddenly become intolerant again?

Planning on ringing the GP this week and also planning to reduce/replace the milk to an alternative to see if it improves.

Just scratching my head on this and wondering if anyone else has experienced similar?

Have they had any bouts of illness / antibiotics recently?

We've just seen the dietician last week for my 2yr old, who they think, developed CMPA at 15months post antibiotics.

But also, my older child used to do this, probably a bit younger though. They have CMPA and have been dairy free since they were 4months old (now 4) - it was because they were having their oat milk and dinner too close to each other and too close to bed.

We swapped their main meal to lunch time and they had a lighter meal (sandwich, toast, pitta bread and hummus etc) in the evening. It seemed to help 😊

Thanks for replying! No oral antibiotics but she did have an antibiotic cream recently for a fungal rash. Wonder if that has had any impact?

I spoke with the GP today and he said recurrence of symptoms from CMPA is highly unlikely and she may be allergic to something else....potentially hay-fever or dustmites etc but I'm not convinced since it's only at night.

He has prescribed an antihistamine to give that a go but even if effective, it will only be a short term solution as I'd like to find out what's causing it.

I still have a sneaking suspicion it's all the milk before bed so I am going to try to switch it to soy milk or even water it down and see if that makes a difference.

She eats way more during the day and can take or leave dinner most nights so the mind boggles!

Hi OP. Not much to add by way of advice but I've been having similar thoughts with my almost two year old. Sailed through the milk ladder at second attempt but I'm not convinced he has passed the final stage with cows milk despite generally being fine. He isn't being sick like he was as a baby, but recently his nappies haven't been great (seem to have gone backwards since being on cows milk consistently when they had actually improved) and I've heard a couple of refluxes, nasal symptoms. It was particularly bad at the weekend when he had more dairy than normal so it did make me wonder.

Like I say, no advice just solidarity as I'm in the same situation. Not sure if your experience has been the same as mine but GPs weren't particularly concerned about CMPA or reflux generally and I had to take control by going dairy free when breastfeeding, weaning etc. I'm convinced his tummy is still a bit upset by milk so going to step back down the milk ladder and see how things change.

My little girl had no issues at all when she was tiny, she had normal formula and ate dairy fine when we weaned her.

She had a sickness bug just before turning 12 months, then we switched to cows milk and she used to vomit every night.

I was fobbed off by doctors and told there was no way she could suddenly develop CMPA, it would have been there from birth etc etc. But I knew my baby, and as soon as we switched her to oat milk she was fine.

She's now 16 months, eats most dairy products fine but she still can't handle drinking whole milk. Nobody has ever been able to explain it and doctors don't seem really interested to be honest. I'd love to understand it but have just accepted it's a bit of a mystery!
