warning : Piriton danger to teeth

Have just come back from the dentist with DD. she has an erosion of enamel on her front 2nd tooth (the adult ones)

Due to a dairy allergy she does not have much sweet stuff (no chocolate at all) and i make sure she washes her teeth every morning after breakfast and every night before bed.

She has 1 glass of coke on a saturday night the rest of the time she drinks water.

Imagine my horror when the liquid piriton was blamed for the decay. Make sure all your children that use this medicine was their teeth afterwards and where possible (age) use a mouth wash

i just wanted to warn parents about this medicine especially at this time of year. Probably my fault for not reading all the small print on the PIL

How much Piriton does she have?

sue1911 · 13/05/2008 19:44

She is prescribed up to 30ml a day but most days she has 5ml in the morning which will last her through. Occasionally she will have 5ml in the evening aswell. This is well below the maximum prescibed dosage for her age (11).

There is no warning on the box or bottle anywhere but after the dentist visit, i found there was a tiny section on the back of the leaflet regarding the ingredients and cleaning teeth after use.

thanks, very useful

Boots own-brand Piriton syrup (Chlorphenamine Maleate) is sugar-free. There is no mention on its leaflet of having to brush teeth.

Thanks - just started using this with my son, who felt it really helped him today. Will make sure about teeth brushing!

Thank you prettycandles. May go to boots for prescription.
