Dairy Free Trial - Constipation?!?

My 15mo DS has always been a frequent (and sometimes explosive) pooper, however since moving from formula to cows milk at 12mo his poos have gotten much worse to the point where they're often leaking etc and he's having up to 5 a day. He also started nursery at this time so for a while we put it down to sicknesses he's picked u or teething but it's been going on for too long now.

He was always a 'happy spitter' and did a lot of poos on formula but since he'd no rashes/blood in stool etc GPs said there was no CMPA. I brought him to the GP again on Friday who said to trial a lactose free diet. We've decided to go completely dairy free since lactose intolerance is unusual in children.

His last bit of dairy was some milk on Thursday night, and he hasn't pooed now since Friday morning. He has never gone more than a day without a poo before. He also hasn't had weetabix or porridge in this time so they could also be the culprit (would have weetabix most days).

I suppose my Q is if there's an intolerance would we expect everything to slow down for the first couple of days? I'm wondering were his bowels so empty from all the pooing that now the dairy is removed would we expect everything to take a while to get through? I'm dreading what this next poo is going to be like....
