I have dust mite allergy. It means I can't wear my big fluffy dressing gown anymore! Really wish I could as the evenings get dark and cold. Theoretically I could if I boil washed it after every wear, but it's not practical and terribly bad for the environment. Fleece is warm and sweaty, so perfect breeding ground for the little buggers.

Also can't drink alcohol. I don't miss that, just wish there was a better range of drinks out that aren't all sugary or fizzy. No one has ever invented a drinkable no alcohol wine.

What have you been sad to give up because your body hates you?

Morphine/ codiene/ Asprin/ ibroprofen.
I'm in pain every day.. and all l can now take is paracetamol.
I just became allergic 10 years ago.

Scampuss · 04/10/2024 19:48

I have an anaphylactic allergy to wheat, so I miss good bread and decent pastry (and so much more) and shopping without having to check everything.

I also can't take NSAIDs as a result of my allergic condition which is frustrating as I often have the sort of pain they'd help with.

And severe hayfever means I miss gardening or just being outdoors on bright sunny days in spring and summer.

LoveSandbanks · 04/10/2024 19:50

Bread. I developed a gluten allergy at perimenopause

criossants, pastries, loads of wheat based products.

Chinese food. I really miss Chinese food

RosieFlamingo · 04/10/2024 19:50

Coeliac here, miss really good bread. Have found some gf bread that's OK but it gives me horrible wind so dc have banned me from it.
Also decent/not extortionate priced biscuits.

Theunamedcat · 04/10/2024 19:51

A proper jam sandwich made with wheat bread real jam and butter gluten free bread is "sweet" gluey nonsense

Anonym00se · 04/10/2024 19:52

Bread, sausage rolls, pies, almond croissants, cakes, biscuits, Yorkshire pudding, pancakes, stuffing, dumplings, proper gravy that hasn’t been thickened with bloody cornflour.

MumChp · 04/10/2024 19:53

Anything with milk and gluten. It's a lot.

Same here why is that??? So frustrating to find something I can technically eat just to turn into Garby (the farting dinosaur from dinotrucks) which is my child's nickname for me when I eat gluten free bread!

Lemonade2011 · 04/10/2024 19:54

Try ‘the loopy whisk’ for recipes. Her sesame seed an tahini cookies are fab. Also all metric with uk ingredients.

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 04/10/2024 19:56

I miss potatoes: chips and baked particularly.

ClementineSatsuma · 04/10/2024 19:57

@Scampuss, that's such a tough one, you have my sympathies.

My eldest has many food allergies. I BF him for 2.5 years and gave up everything he was allergic to (dairy, egg, nuts, legumes, fish) during this time.

What did I miss most? Milk chocolate. Since stopping breastfeeding, I've eaten it almost every day. I'm so hoping DC grows out of their allergies for many reasons, but I'd love them to be able to try real milk chocolate.

Aworldofmyown · 04/10/2024 19:58

My body doesn't like Rapeseed oil, and now it's all companies want to use 😑 i miss bread, fridge spreadable butter, nice salad dressings, mayonnaise, salad cream. The list gets longer and longer.

Another vote for the Loopy Whisk recipes. My gluten eating children will happily eat bread made with her recipes, and they are harsh critics! I order the specialty flours from Shipton Mill.

It's my youngest DC with allergies not me, but as he's dairy, gluten, egg and soya free and sensitive to cross contamination we can't eat out anywhere easily as a family. I miss being able to occasionally have a family day out without having to having prepared food for everyone, including some for contingencies for example if we end up staying a bit later.

shellyleppard · 04/10/2024 20:06

Being pain free. Nsaids upset my stomach which stops my thyroid medication working. So i just have to limp around. Have been to the pain management clinic and they have given me slow release morphine patches. ..... they are still in the cupboard as I don't want to get addicted to them.

twistingmymelons · 04/10/2024 20:07

oats, even gluten-free as a Coeliac I cannot tolerate them and I love porridge

I'm coeliac too and so miss nice bread! What's the brand that you've discovered recently, Rosie?

letiton · 04/10/2024 20:26

Peanut butter.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 04/10/2024 21:02

So many things have gluten in. I have a gluten intolerant sibling, so always make sure to have gf options when they are round. It's amazing how many things it sneaks in to. At least labeling has impressed now they have to bold allergens, used to have to know obscure names and e numbers.

I can't wear contact lenses any more due to year round rhinitis wiyh hayfever in summer too. Would be useful with all this rain as much easier to see than with fogged up glasses.

@ClementineSatsuma my LO has similar allergies and it’s so hard, legumes especially as no one takes it seriously.

I miss being anxiety free and not seeing food as dangerous

The fresh warburtons tiger loaf is good (but gives me wind) and the asda own brand whole meal rolls are nice but last a suspiciously long time so not sure what's in them.

ClementineSatsuma · 04/10/2024 21:39

@Mushroo To give you a little hope, my little one outgrew their bean allergy at age 3.5 and their pea allergy at age 4. Tests on the NHS were negative and they passed challenges (would get hives before).
We're also currently doing immunotherapy for lentils in London.

Sorry, bit of a thread de-rail, but I like to spread a little hope in the gloomy allergy world!

P.S. Legumes are one of the hardest to deal with as they're in everything nowadays and not in bold, so it is a total headache. It also means we can't really eat out as we ask for the allergen menu but they don't even include legumes so what is the point?!

That’s amazing! Thank you so much for sharing.

We’re hoping to start immunotherapy for peanut / Hazlenut and pea soon, choosing pea over lentils to start as peas are in everything it seems! (Although we’ve managed to get her onto 1 pea a day whilst we wait so I’m really really hoping she might outgrow long term…)

is the immunotherapy going well for lentils? We might look to do it in the future too

ClementineSatsuma · 04/10/2024 21:54

@Mushroo I love that about the single pea! We give 3 Hippea crisps a day for chickpea tolerance 😂
While my little one passed a pea challenge, we still haven't tried pea protein as apparently this is yellow pea (split peas), and many kids who tolerate pea won't tolerate pea protein. It worries me a bit, so we may ask for the NHS to do pea protein as his next food challenge in a year.

We only started very recently with lentils, so early days. We're doing it alongside hazelnut and cashew which is great. The more the merrier if you ask me.

We did sesame last year and he now eats a spoonful of tahini a day, it's mad.
