I'm having to follow a dairy and gluten free diet at the moment. On the whole not being able to eat biscuits, chocolate and cakes is doing me the world of good, but I would like to know if some nice treats for when I'm having a moment of weakness! Can anyone recommend anything that is easily available?

Oat bars are my treat when vegan chocolate/free from cake isn't an option.

Making your own (pancakes/biscuits/cake) works ok once you've nailed the recipe.

Peppermint creams and sweets like jelly babies also an option.

The plus side of being df/gf is you tend not to eat UPF at least!

tunainatin · 13/09/2024 07:27

Thanks, i agree I seem to end up avoiding most upf which is great! Would peppermint creams not have dairy in? Oat bars I need to explore further, I was avoiding assuming that most would contain some wheat. I like the idea of making my own but would like some quicker options too!

I eat nairns oat biscuits. Come in little packs of 3 or 4 and lots of flavours

handmademitlove · 13/09/2024 08:12

Vegan Galaxy is also gluten free - not all are.

marriednotdead · 13/09/2024 20:38

I follow that diet although not totally strict as I'm not coeliac, and I'm a sucker for snacks and treats so usually have some or all of these in.
Chocolate above 70% dark is almost always dairy free.
Swedish Glacé ice cream is delicious!
Haribos.
Pecan nuts- if I'm trying to not eat junk then I'll have a handful alongside a banana.
If you fancy something simple, bananas in soy custard or chopped berries in soya yogurt are good ones.
Crisps.
Sesame Snaps.
Jelly.

tunainatin · 13/09/2024 22:14

Thanks for the suggestions, getting a bit fed up of fruit and nuts so will get a few of these things in.

If you fancy baking, dove farm gluten free brownies recipe comes out nicely using coconut oil instead of butter. Probably should use a bit less coconut oil than the butter amount. My other fav gf recipe is green and blacks chocolate mousse cake but I've never made that with coconut. Meringues with Swedish glacé and fruit would be nice.

Nomo chocolate, because although dark chocolate is best sometimes you need the milky style stuff.

Amaretti biscuits are often but not always GF and dairy free.

These are amazing! I bought them for my dd who is allergic to dairy and intolerant to gluten and she loves them. I had one, and tbh, I think they are better than Maryland. They don't make my teeth feel funny, which Maryland tend to do. They do have UPFs but tbh, anything that is trying to recreate a 'normal' food they need to use things that help do that.

Oh, so many options!

Off the top of my head:

Anything Rhythm 108
Oddly good yoghurts
Chocomel vegan chocolate drink
vegan little moons (moochi balls!)

all 🤤🤤🤤

SisSuffragette · 13/09/2024 23:02

Second the rhythm 108 biscuits and chocolate. So good

PickAChew · 13/09/2024 23:04

I can't eat chocolate or citrus (or most fruit) either and am beginning to understand why so many elderly people eat a "plain diet"!

If I'm going out for the day and can't guarantee finding some lunch I put an Eat Natural protein bar in my handbag. Most varieties are chocolate coated but they do one without. I did enjoy a Nairn's oatie or 4 but have realised that I need to keep the oats to a minimum, too. I love those alpro caramel desserts and always have a pot of coconut collab gut health yog on the go to go with my granola or on a curry - I'm conscious that I need to sneak more calcium into my diet any which way and supplements aren't UPF free, either.so I might as well enjoy it.

I've grown to enjoy the simplicity of decent ready salted crisps. Waitrose and Tyrrels do the nicest ones. M&S ones are usually rancid (you really can taste the oil without all the flavourings)

PickAChew · 13/09/2024 23:07

GF hobnobs are lovely, too. I don't buy them because I eat too many!

DeliciousApples · 13/09/2024 23:23

Make traybakes from doves farm gluten free flour and eggs instead of milk. I always intend to freeze them but they don't last that long!!! So moreish!!

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 14/09/2024 07:08

M&S iced spiced buns, gluten free but also no milk. Apparently really nice microwaved but have never lasted that long! www.ocado.com/products/m-s-made-without-2-ice-spice-buns-584556011?srsltid=AfmBOooHrBmwWB7nV4nRfgk8ur_JeRnumWI6dpOHd1CCHxt8-dSKzfj9

Peppermint creams are basically icing sugar with peppermint essence, sometimes covered in dark but dairy free chocolate

bakewellbride · 14/09/2024 19:42

HIP chocolate is the best

GingerLiberalFeminist · 14/09/2024 19:44

Good vegan chocolate - Vegolino, Rhythm
Mid range - Nomo
Cheap but we all need cheap! Supermarket own

Nature Valley oat bars are vegan. Always check the label though.

Also i recently found out they changed Twitter ice creams to be vegan 🤩
