Is my baby allergic to his milk, or is nystatin causing his tummy issues?

Hi,

I am looking for some advice because I am at a loss and am starting to really worry about my baby!!

I have an 11 week old little boy who is waiting for a an appointment with a paediatrician due to him having multiple issues with feeding and his tummy. These include clicking when feeding (doesn’t have a tongue tie), arching back, pooing multiple times per day (sometimes 5+ times per day), raspy sounding chest, hard tummy etc.

However, he has had continuous thrush in his mouth that has not gone away since he was around 5 weeks old. He is now on his 7th bottle of nystatin!!! I’m really starting to get concerned that the nystatin may be contributing to some of his symptoms and I’m worried this medicine could be really harming his gut!

We have been to the doctors on 4 separate occasions but they have just continued to prescribe more nystatin and have said that they can’t look at his other issues until his thrush has gone. He has the tiniest speckle of it still in the corner of his mouth, do I stop it to see if this helps with his tummy? Or will that just encourage the thrush to spread again?

I’m really worried about him, but the hospital can’t tell me how long his referral to the paediatrician is going to take

If anyone has experienced anything similar I would love to know!! No one has ever seemed to have seen a baby be on nystatin continuously for this long, and it’s really starting to worry me!

** he is not loosing any weight and is not refusing feeds

@EbonyLK it sounds as though you're really struggling. Having had one DC with TT that was missed by multiple HCPs, the first thing I've hit to ask is who has said there's definitely no TT?

@PolaroidPrincess

I have mentioned this to both the HV and GP and both of them have said they don’t believe he has a TT! I’ve tried him with a different bottle (we’be been using MAM bottles since he was born) and this didn’t change any of the clicking! He does also click sometimes when he is suckling his dummy.

When he’s drinking his milk he will only latch properly a few times during a feed and take a good gulp of milk, but the rest of the feed he is clicking, constantly sucking and sometimes spills from his mouth.

I’m not sure if all of this excess sucking is what keeps aggravating his mouth and encouraging the thrush? I’m really at a loss.

We are using Milton cold water to sterilise all bottles and dummies. I change his dummies 4-5 times per day to make sure they stay fresh but nothing seems to be working!
