Lactose free milk nightmare!

Hi all,

My 5 month old son had a stomach upset that began 3 weeks ago. Tests showed nothing abnormal in the poop and we were just told to ‘ride it out’ with it being just a tummy bug.

Two weeks after it began and I felt it was something other than just a stomach upset, as I had from the beginning! I kicked myself for not acting sooner.

Anyway, we begun him on Aptamil Lactose Free Formula which rectified the diarrhoea almost instantly, although his poo did go quite an alarming green colour but I’m led to believe that’s quite normal after switch to LFF.

However, as of 48 hours ago his poos are now very firm pellets (roughly the size of a grape) and he strains to pass them. We’ve had two episodes of this over the course of 2 days, so two tiny little poos in 48 hours. He is drinking as normal and within the guidelines: x5 6oz bottles across 24 hours.

Is this normal when transitioning/being on LFF and is there anything I can do to help him?

It’s heartbreaking - my poor boy can’t catch a break!

It could be a delayed reaction to milk. Lactose intolerance is quite rare in babies. It's more likely that it's a dairy allergy. It might be worth speaking to your GP about a trial of a dairy free formula. Constipation is as much of an allergy symptom as loose stools.

Did the doctor tell you to try lactose free rather than dairy free formula ? They are not the same things and agree with pp that constipation is as much of a problem as diarrhoea.

far more likely to be a dairy allergy…..maybe see gp and request a trial of an EHF formula …..they will prescribe it for you

How are you both getting in now @Kj2804?
