Nutramigen Woes

Hi all,

We’ve had a very sad baby from about 2/3 weeks always concerning his digestion, pooing and farting. We had been prescribed Gaviscon and now omeprezol for silent reflux whilst I was EBF.

From week 3 I have asked if they think it might be CMPA and I was told no he would need to have AWFUL nappies in double digits, it was not double digits (at the time). However around three weeks ago I brought this up again as he had all the symptoms, sticky eye, rash on cheeks, dry skin around eyes, restlessness, crying and struggling to fart and poo. A very nice GP prescribed Nutramigen whilst I eliminated dairy to also be able to do 1 or 2 feeds a day in the future. (i know they say to feed through but this is not what I want to do knowing I have dairy in my system.)

Things seemed on the up until recently starting with a nappy rash that looks like burnt, raw blistered skin. We change his nappy as soon as he goes and we always use cream but it’s not touched it. A nurse suspected thrush however it was bacterial and worsened for five days before we challenged this again and got antibiotics .

He seems like he’s reverted back, pain in his belly, awful gas, is a struggle to burp, starting to get dry skin and mucus nappies. These are maybe 14 a day. Not all are huge however they are mostly pooping a bit when he farts, which again we change straight away due to his rash.

I guess what I’m asking is has anyone had this also and had a next step that’s helpful. My inkling is to ask to trial Neocate as I think LO might just be super sensitive to the remaining CMP in Nutramigen. As I said he mood seems a tad better, but the screaming regarding nappies and his pain has just replaced his issues poor mite.

Any mammas with experience I’d love to hear from you ahead of our GP appointment tomorrow!

Thanks in advance

I would ask for the other milk and also a referral to a Paediatric Dietician. What cream are you using for the nappy rash?

So an update. He was prescribed Nutramigen Puramino on Monday. Nappy rash is almost gone and he is SO MUCH happier after two days. I know this will fluctuate probably but early signs are promising.

however there is a shortage of puramino in the UK, so we have 8 tins but might not be able to get it until may: they’ve prescribed SMA Alfamino as an alternative but I’m really hesitant to switch AGAIN and I’ve seen some babies don’t like it when LO has really taken to the Puramino.

Ive been calling round pharmacies here to get it and managed another 6 tins but all hopes are on it being available in the UK come may! 😭

I don't know if you are still breastfeeding but it only takes 8h to clear dairy from your breastmilk so your breastmilk would have had less dairy in it than the formula you were using to avoid giving dairy containing breastmilk
Alfamino is probably the best of the amino acid formulas to be honest. It's the most hypoallergenic as it is free from soya too and it's coconut free and whilst not a common allergen it can upset a few babies. It was the only formula my daughter could have and she was on it from 10 months to 2 years.

We were also started on PurAmino with amazing results and when I turned up to the pharmacy to collect the next lot one day, it had been replaced with Alfamino. Honestly after so many difficulties and finally feeling like we were settled I wanted to cry! (And did a bit, I'll be honest).
I didn't even have enough to mix it so I went ahead and gave her a bottle of the Alfamino. All the while silently praying about it and googling to see if anyone had any leftover puramino tins.

Turns out she quite liked it. Took it fine and had zero negative effects from the change!

If you're worried, ask to switch to Alfamino earlier so you can slowly mix the bottles but honestly there's a good chance little one won't care. Mine seemed to be of the opinion that as long as it didn't have milk protein in it, she was grand!
