Hi, need some advice please. I'm at the end of my tether and I'm getting conflicting information from Doctors, Nurses, NHS direct, pharmacists and people who have had similar experiences.
Had my rook pierced 10 days ago.
Swelled up and red hot 2 days later.
Nurse gave me antibiotics. Got worse after another 2 days. Another nurse gives me a different antibiotic. Eat gets even worse next 2 days. There's now pus and I look like the elephant man.
Called 111 and they can't do anything for me as I'm not experiencing any septic shock type symptoms.
Doctor has given me ANOTHER different antibiotic on Friday just gone.
The pharmacist that I've been going to thinks this is all a complete joke and I should have been given this most recent antibiotic in the first place as it's a penicillin based one.
Pharmacist said I should give it 2 days and I should start to see an improvement. I haven't. The pus is worse than ever.
I've been cleaning it twice a day with salt water. I've been advised to do this since day 1.
I don't know where to go next.
Doctor told me last week that I have to be patient and give it the full course.
But that is not what the pharmacist or nurses have said. They keep telling me it SHOULD improve after 48 hours.
Im concerned it's not improving and I'm going to end up really poorly.
Im happy to wait til end of antibiotics course but I'm worried that this ear is still red - albeit just warm now - still extremely swollen and pussing more by the day.
What should I do??!!

Just to add, the piercing is still in as advised by doctor. The piercer I went to has just advised me he used sterile equipment and the piercing is titanium.

Keep taking the anti biotics and keep cleaning it with the salt water. If it’s getting worse you will need to take the piercing out, as that is the scourge of your infection. The problem with cartilage piercing is that the blood supply is poor, so it’s difficult for the antibiotics to work well. Did the doctor not give you antibiotic cream as well?

QueenofTerrasen · 15/10/2023 15:46

Take it out. I've had this with cartilage piercings in my ears, I've tried twice and they won't take for me. Some people can't have them, it might even be the titanium doing it rather than an infection. Take the piercing out and I'm willing to bet it will be fine within a few days. If you try again, get pierced with either surgical steel or 18k gold.

No, they didn't mention cream to me. The doctor said don't take out as the hole will close and there won't be anywhere for the pus to drain from? They were so rude to me on Friday and made out that I just need to get on with it. Basically- stop bothering them. I might ring them tomorrow and say the Piercer has said it needs to come out and I need cream. They aren't listening to me at all. So maybe it needs to come from someone else
