If you can move a 12month old onto cow's milk at 12 months, can I give my dairy allergic DS soya milk rather than formula?

He is currently totally bf, but I would like to give up. He won't take Neocate or Soya formula. Is there any reason why I can't give him soya milk out of a carton instead?

I did, ds1 has been on soya milk from a carton since he was 1 and is now 4. Ds2 will do the same.

It's not recommended as formula has the extra vitamins/calcium, and soya allergy is quite common.

yes you can, we did this, but then my son developed a slight soya intollerance (it's now gone away again). But maybe you'll be okay. Or you could try Neocate (we're using Neocate Active) with hot chocolate powder and then gradually decrease the amount of chocolate you add over a week or so - it worked for us.

You can do this but if you have any issues with his weight or nutrition then it is best to give him formula. My DD1 was on SMA LF until she was three as she was very underweight and soya milk does not have as much fat as cows milk. There is also a slight risk of developing a soya allergy if they are overexposed, my dd2 is 21mths and has had soya or rice milk since I stopped bf, it really does depend on how healthy the child is and what they are getting from the rest of there diet. It is actually best not to over expose a child to any single food if they are already prone to allergies.

My ds1 was on hypo-allergenic formula til 2 years cause he is a skinny shrimp and is now on soya/oat/rice milk w. vitamin suppliments. We got him to drink it over the course of a couple of weeks by mixing it with milk that he would drink.
