Colic? Reflux? CMPA?

Hello All,

My daughter is 5.5 weeks at the moment and is currently combi fed but majority of this is formula. For various reasons my wife has not been able to breast feed and so from day 1 we've been feeding my daughter formula, starting with ready made Aptamil. After the first week she would just cry like no tomorrow and would seem to be in quite a bit of discomfort and would bring up her milk regularly. We changed over to C&G comfort which stopped her vomiting, but it just seemed to make her even more comfortable. One weekend she cried non-stop for the whole day leading us to call the paramedics and going to the hospital only to be told she has colic. Next day we changed over to Kendamil and she seemed to have improved instantly, but now it seems she gets very uncomfortable after a feed hunching her back, kicking her legs and just crying in pain.

She also hates lying on her back and has a very raspy congested throat, a lot of grunting, a lot of sneezing, hiccups and farting endlessly leading me to believe she has silent reflux but maybe also have some sort of CMPA.

The HV and GP's just seem to think its colic and that it'll pass but I think this is just because she's asleep whenever they see her and her weight and other readings all seem to be normal. I'm not convinced and tempted to try hypoallergenic formula just to see how she gets on. We've infacol, gripe water etc but nothing seems to help.

Thanks for reading and any advice would be appreciated.

It might be a non-ige reaction to milk. The only way to see is to come off the milk for about 4 weeks and see if it makes a difference. You then go back to milk formula and see if symptoms return. Can you get different milk?

I can certainly get a hold of hypoallergenic milk, rather expensive without a prescription but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Just to follow up for anyone interested, we got my daughter prescribed on omeprazole which seems to have done the trick and now she's sooo much better. Having said this she is still very gassy and writhes around with a stomach ache at least once a day.

It's nowhere near as bad as it was before but would still like to get to the bottom of it. Will follow up with the GP to see what they think but at this stage I think we'll hope she'll grow out of it.

Sounds just like my DD - after a prescription for omeprazole we got her on a 'level' but she still wasn't great.
Don't let the GP fob you off, we didn't get a CMPA diagnosis until 9 months as we kept getting the 'all babies cry' 'they grow out of silent reflux' lines.
Reflux is a symptom not a diagnosis. Good luck x
