WTF sudden allergic reaction to toothpaste?

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 10/04/2022 17:02

Brushing teeth in shower today and my lips were agony, v itchy and sore and red with hives all around my mouth.

Now have swollen eyelids but otherwise settled after taking over of DS' super strength anti-histamines.

No idea what ingrédient to start looking out for, anyone got any ideas?

If it helps I am currently under investigation for EDS and have a known adhesives allergy

DH had this we never worked out what ingredient it was but he stopped sharing my toothpaste. For him it was the arm and hammer one he needs to avoid I thought they were more gentle.

FailedFledge · 10/04/2022 17:16

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) it's the foaming ingredient.

Mum and I are both allergic. Shreds the inner lining of my mouth in to little strings.

You can get a few toothpastes and mouthwashes without it.

Carbiesdreamhouse · 10/04/2022 17:17

Yep, sls. Makes my lips peel and go dry for ages if I use toothpaste with it. Sensodyne is sls free.

Has2sons · 10/04/2022 17:19

I had to stop using the Arm and Hammer sensitive one. Now having bother with Corsodyl. Thanks @FailedFledge, I’ll keep an eye out for and avoid SLS!

Thank you. I just used a shampoo her that was chock full of SLS the other day and had a bad reaction so that figures.

I did also have a tooth glued back together on Thursday so that could have triggered something too.

Whilst I'm sorry other people suffer I am glad itt is actually a 'thing' and not just me

I thought I was just freaky until I finally complained about the mouth strings to mum and she knew exactly what I was talking about.

WhoWants2Know · 10/04/2022 18:02

I react to that as well, and I have to use kids fruit flavoured toothpaste.

Birdy272 · 10/04/2022 18:04

That's funny cos the only toothpaste I've experienced the fleshy mouth strings with is Sensodyne, and I used it for a while.

I was using Aldi dentifex fresh breath toothpaste, think it does have SLS in.

2 DCs are v sensitive to SLS but they just get ulcers/sores likes you mention. Not hives.

Just remembered I reacted to No7 lipstick and crayons last week, think being ill is just making me reacty. Poor DS had an allergic reaction to fresh parsley last week so think we just need to lay low 'til the pollen settles a bit
